Xavier Tilliette

Xavier Tilliette is a philosopher , historian of philosophy and theologian born French 23 July 1921 at Corbie ( Somme ). Former student of Jean Wahl and Vladimir Janklvitch , he is a member of the Society of Jesus ( 1938 ) and professor emeritus at the Catholic Institute of Paris ( 1969 ), the Gregorian University in Rome ( 1972 ), the University Lateran and the Centre Svres and Jaspers , it develops from the 1970's a " philosophical Christology "which he is the initiator . In the tradition of Schelling and Maurice Blondel , he defends and illustrates the idea of a Christian philosophy born of the Revelation. There is also a specialist Claudel and German idealism.

Xavier Tilliette was twice winner of a prize from the French Academy. Several of his works were translated into German, Spanish, English and Italian.

Originally both artesian and Breton , Xavier Tilliette is the second in a family of eight children. His father is a childhood friend of Georges Bernanos. After completing his primary and secondary school of the Immaculate Conception of Laval , Xavier Tilliette obtained at the age of 16 years the French Baccalaureate and the German Abitur. The following year, in 1938, he joined the Jesuit order to begin her novitiate. This calling came to him from the age of 12.

At the same time, he developed a passion for poetry, especially that of the symbolists , Valry and Apollinaire, while the verses of Paul Claudel did not attract much at first. Then, attracted by the force of metaphors and rhythm Claudel, it reads in the space of two or three years the whole work of the author, where he became a specialist. Xavier Tilliette publish such correspondence with Claudel Franoise Marcilly. Over the literary columns he published later in tvdes Claudel remains for him the great Christian poet, even more than Patrice de La Tour du Pin. At the same time as his literary activities, he published many film critics, including the neorealism Italian but also in a particular field of interest: the biographical films, which represent for him the younger brother of literary biography. He is one of the founders of the magazine Positif and also contributes to Film Studies.

During his formative years, Xavier gets a Tilliette OF in Classics and German. He stayed successively in Laval, the former college Mongre at Villefranche-sur-Saone to Lyon. There he discovered the texts of Teilhard de Chardin , then put away the Company. The work of Teilhard'm struck with a curse, it is widely read and circulated among the Jesuits, more than Poucel Victor , who also expresses a Christianity "glorious", "triumphant," but within the line Company. In Lyon, various pharmacies offer editions of Teilhard cheap, more or less legal. These two forms of spirituality, one faithful to the tradition and the other illegal sticks in two generations of Jesuits in the 1920s to the 1950s. Xavier Tilliette come off later the influence of Teilhard, while seeing in him, above all, a writer lyrical style oratory.

Ordained in 1951 , he was appointed professor of philosophy at Paris , the college " Franklin ", first from 1947 to 1949 and from 1954 to 1957. He teaches phenomenology and existentialism , before lecturing at Jesuit Scholasticate of Chantilly on the phenomenology of Husserl , among others, from 1961 to 1966. Marked by the thought of Sartre , but also and especially by that of Merleau-Ponty , he is a disciple of Jean Wahl then Janklvitch Vladimir , where he became a close friend. Fond of Kierkegaard , for Jaspers , of Hegel , he follows the advice of Jean Wahl, who suggested to orient its work towards' later philosophy of Schelling , that is to say the Sptphilosophie: the "philosophy of revelation. " He obtained his doctorate in theology and philosophy in Sorbonne with a dissertation on Schelling in two volumes in 1969.

Professor of the History of Philosophy at the Catholic Institute of Paris (1969), where he finds his former student John Greisch , he alternates his semester courses with those it gives the Gregorian University in Rome from 1972. Teacher at the Lateran University and the Centre Sevres , he is a visiting professor at many foreign universities : Lima , Santiago , Berlin , Bremen , Freiburg , Heidelberg , Hamburg , Munich , Bonn , Tubingen , Turin , Ferrara , Urbino , Rome , Macerata , Naples , Palermo. He speaks fluent English, Italian, German and Spanish, in addition to Latin, Greek and Hebrew, and reads Portuguese and Danish. This brings the cosmopolitan culture of the writer Marcel Brion and his wife Liliane, which binds a long friendship .

In 1993, the Pontifical Faculty of Theology in southern Italy called the doctor honoris causa. Winner of two awards from the French Academy (the price Montyon in 1991 and the price of Cardinal Grente in 2001) and the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences (for his book Philosophies Eucharistic , 2006) he received in Berlin medal Humboldt in 2001. Member of the Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Filosofici, Xavier Tilliette was elected in 2002 at the Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften in Munich and in 2006, corresponding to the Accademia di estetica internazionale Rapallo. He is Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur and the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
