St. Peter's Cathedral of Worms (in German: is the main church building and the largest of Worms , and ranks alongside the cathedrals of Speyer and Mainz among churches Romanesque most remarkable Valley Rhine. This imposing basilica four round towers, two large domes, and a choir at each end. It has an outward appearance of strength and authority, architectural, while the impression made by the interior is one of great dignity and simplicity highlighted by the natural color of the red sandstone used in its construction.
Only the ground plan and the lower part of the western towers are from the original building consecrated in 1110. The remainder was mostly completed in 1181 , but the western choir and the vault was built in XIII century , the developed south portal was added to the fourteenth century , and the central dome was rebuilt.
The decoration of the oldest parts is simple, to limit the counting, and even the later works, more refined, does not show a greater decorative invoice. However the main altar is an example of Baroque Franconian sculptor Rococo , Johann Wolfgang von der Auwera. The baptistery houses five remarkable stone reliefs from the late fifteenth century.
The cathedral is 358 feet long in length and 89 feet wide, and, including the transepts, near the western facade of 118 feet.
