Woman Of The Apocalypse

The Virgin as the Woman of the Apocalypse, Peter Paul Rubens.

Woman of the Apocalypse is a character Bible that appears in chapter 12 of the book of the Apocalypse Text

"1 A great portent appeared in heaven: a woman! the sun 's envelope, the moon under her feet and twelve stars crowning her head, 2 she was pregnant and crying in pain and labor of childbirth. 3 Then another sign appeared in heaven: an enormous dragon fire red , with seven heads and ten horns , each head crowned with a tiara. 4 His tail swept a third of the stars of heaven and cast them to earth. Off before the woman in labor, the dragon about to devour her child once born. 5 And the woman bore a male child, who will rule all nations with a scepter of iron: and her child was caught up 'from God and his throne, 6 while the woman fled into the desert where God has left a shelter for it to be nourished for one thousand two hundred sixty days. 7 Then there was war in the heaven: Michael and his angels fought the Dragon. And the dragon fought with his angels , 8 but they had the worst and were driven out of heaven. Interpretations

Woman of the Apocalypse may refer to Mary but also to the Church, Israel and Eve .

Marie

Inmaculada Concepcion, Francisco de Zurbarn.

In the tradition of Catholic , this woman is sometimes referred to Mary after his assumption. This view is echoed by including Pius X , Paul VI and John Paul II . Under this interpretation, the "male child" is a reference to Jesus (Revelation 12:5), since it is intended to "lead all nations with a rod of iron" (ibid.). The dragon tried to devour the newborn at birth could be an allusion to the attempt of Herod to kill Jesus , he fled into the desert an echo of the flight into Egypt. For his death and resurrection , Jesus "was taken straight up to God and His throne" (Rev. 12:5).

In some artistic representations of the Immaculate Conception and the Assumption , Mary is sometimes depicted with the symbols related to women's Apocalypse: enveloped by the sun, crowned with stars and the moon under his feet.

However, as the biblical commentator Louis-Claude Fillion , if at first the woman of the Apocalypse seems to be the Virgin Mary and that many interpreters have taken this position, this is "an allegorical figure of a mother mystic "who represent the Church in truth.

The Church

According to some Protestant denominations, the woman of the Apocalypse represents the Church of Christ and his child the saints and "those who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus" (Rev 12:17) .

The Catholic Church also recognizes that interpretation:

The reciprocal relationship between the mystery of the Church and Mary appears clearly in the "great portent" described in the Apocalypse: "A great portent appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, the moon under her feet and its crown of twelve stars head "(12, 1). The Church acknowledges that sign a picture of his own mystery

For Seventh-day Adventists , it is traditionally an image of the remnant Church .

Eve

The woman is identified as Eve. The "ancient serpent" (Rev. 12:9), that is to say Satan , is present at the beginning of Genesis. The conflict between the woman and her child and the snake may refer to Gen 3:5, where it says: "I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between your offspring and hers." Chapter 3 of Genesis and Section 12 of the Apocalypse are both marked pain of childbirth.
