Wiki is a project of multilingual of digital library , supported by the Foundation , free access, without advertising, freely distributable, built by volunteers who rely on technology wiki. The project was launched on 23 November 2003 and was initially named Project Sourceberg before being officially called "Wiki" on 26 December 2003.

Wikisource publishes a wide variety of texts: literary works ( novels , poems , stories ...), of history ( treaties , biographies ), of philosophy , of journals , and many others, provided their license is compatible with the GFDL. It uses the editorial resources of the wiki which allows - among others - to classify the texts (by genre, times ...) to provide systems navigation between chapters, linking them in a reference text ... It allows edit a document with images of the source of reference in regard to ensure the reliability of proofreading.

Summary

/ / The founding principles of the project

Three principles are particularly important in defining the implementation of this project Editing tools

Wikisource has gradually put in place and tools specific to the nature of his project.

The use of a wiki for editing texts raises the question of the reliability of the work done by Wikisourciens. On the one hand, this work can be easily vandalized, since anyone who has access to Wiki may edit content, on the other hand, the editing work itself must be checked to ensure project quality.

Validation of texts

To achieve a sufficient guarantee for readers, admits Wikisource semi-protection of texts read by several contributors. Thus, only registrants can edit text validated. Readers in IP can report errors on a page linked on all pages of discussion texts validated discussion pages are also given where all information relating to the edition.

The progress of the validation of a text is indicated by the following icons , placed in the tab text: 00%. Svg , 25%. Svg , 50%. Svg , 75%. Svg , 100%. Svg Star

Editing work with the scanned image of the source text

But the tools to really ensure the quality of the edition is displayed next to images of the edited text (see image cons). This tool was made by a contributor Wikisource .

This tool is used as follows: after copying the image on the server of a text , a contributor publishes a named space page: followed by the name of the copied image. The image appears in this space, and consult the contributor while using the edit box. The entire document can then be reconstituted in text mode on a single page with inclusions.

This tool was introduced in August 2006, and its use is not general. To read the first books available in page mode: Books available in page mode.

Multilingual Publishing

Division by language areas do not entirely separate sub-projects, since there are links allowing the simultaneous display of two pages of two distinct areas. Thus, when a contributor to the French Wikisource publishes a translation of an English text, the interwiki link that binds these two texts will automatically create a bilingual edition.

Using Wikisource

The first and fundamental usefulness of Wikisource is reading. Editing and organizing text attempts to be as simple as possible for consultation. Thus, research texts, Wikisource has an index of authors, rankings periods, themes, etc..

But the reader's comfort is also important, and for ease of reading on screen, it is possible to use the monobook his account to fit the text (paragraphs and width of the size of the letters) to the effort that must be provided eyes. Finally, an extension pdf exists, but not yet fully developed, it will not be available in future as yet undetermined.

The reading on the site is not the only purpose of Wikisource. Quality editions should allow the project to serve as reference for odd jobs, from college to university. Some texts published on Wikisource are thus given in connection with academic sites, we find Internet links to examples of bibliographies for academic courses and the bibliography in a master's thesis in philosophy . Wikisource can also serve as a source citation to articles. The syntax is then (within ) Examples of work in progress

Major works may be illustrated by texts such as, for French texts:

It is also possible to organize portals to bring together texts on specific issues such as:

Partnership with the National Veterinary School of Toulouse

The National Veterinary School of Toulouse (ENVT), one of four major schools of veterinary medicine of France joined France for publishing theses of the nineteenth century. However, contributors Wikisource has not been approached by for this project.

Partnership with the National Library of France

The BnF has offered to contributors Wikisource provide them with their 1500 books scanned OCR to correct them.

Examples from the Wikisource germanophone

"To facilitate the work of the community Wikisource germanophone, the German association has provided a budget of 1 500 for scanning books and ancient manuscripts. The community members themselves will decide jointly how to spend this allocation for new projects. "

  • In May 2006, Deutschland (German association) has funded the digitization of a manuscript entitled Drei school mathematics Register Arithmetischer ahnfeng zur Practic.
  • "Beginning in September 2006, the third volume of" Zimmerische Chronicle "has been transcribed. It is a chronicle written by Count Froben Christoph von Zimmern in the sixteenth century and published in 1881 by the German historian Karl August Barack. The transcript of the fourth volume is one of the biggest projects Wikisource speaking world. Electronic publishing has been launched by a historian from the University of Freiburg in Breisgau, which acts as a scientific consultant for the project. "

A vote was held in April 2005 , the question of creating subdomains language. The result was largely in favor of this. After the arrival of a new version of Mediawiki allowing a transfer of preserving the historical pages, subdomains were finally created in mid-August, and the pages have been imported 27 August 2005.

In May 2006 , while a consultation had begun to organize among the contributors to Wikisource for choosing a new logo , Jimbo Wales , founder of , has decided to change it.

In August 2006, a contributor has created a Wiki editing tool allowing the correction of texts with pictures next to it. See earlier in this article Space page.
