Walter Kasper, born 5 March 1933 in Heidenheim in Germany , is a theologian and cardinal, Catholic German , president emeritus of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity since July 2010.

Training
After his baccalaurat in 1952 , Walter Kasper began studying philosophy and theology at Tbingen and Munich. He was ordained priest for the Diocese of Rottenburg- Stuttgart on 6 April 1957 and obtained his doctorate in theology at the University of Tbingen in 1961 (with a thesis on "the doctrine of Tradition in the Roman School).
Priest and theologian
He spends most of his priestly ministry to education. First assistant professors Leo Scheffczyk and Hans Kng (between 1961 and 1964), he defended his habilitation thesis in 1964 on the philosophy and theology of history in the philosophy of the last Schelling ("Theologie und Philosophie der Geschichte in der Sptphilosophie Schellings). He became professor of dogmatic theology at the theological faculty of Mnster (1964 to 1970), which will be dean and professor of dogmatic theology at the University of Tbingen (1970 to 1989). He is recognized as a theologian from his landmark book "Jesus Christ" (1974, tr. Com. 1976).
He is secretary of the Synod of Bishops in Rome extraordinary in 1985.
He was a member of the International Theological Commission and was the principal writer of "The Faith of the Church" (Catechism of German adults). He attended the Theological Dialogue Commission on Faith and the World Council of Churches.
It is generally considered a Catholic theologian at once open, robust and secure. According to Professor Gilles Routhier, of the University Laval (Quebec): Begun in the wake of Vatican II, the theological work of Professor Kasper reflects the current issues in the Catholic Church since the Council. Turn to the editorial board of two major magazines that have fueled this debate - Concilium (1970-1977) and Communio (from 1983) - Professor Kasper has attempted to reconcile the freedom of the theologian and the reference to the Magisterium, questions and requests of our contemporaries and fidelity to tradition. On 16 March 1999 , he was appointed to Rome as secretary of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. It was created cardinal by Pope John Paul II during the Consistory of 21 February 2001 with the title of Cardinal Deacon of Ognissanti in Via Appia Nuova in the Ognissanti Church and became president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Unity Christians of the 3 March 2001. It is confirmed in this office by Pope Benedict XVI on 21 April 2005. Within the Roman Curia , he is also a member of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith , the Congregation for Oriental Churches , the Pontifical Council for Culture , the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts , the Pontifical Council for Dialogue Inter-religious and the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura. Its international mission has "led the adventurer of ecumenism to reach out to leaders of other Churches and Ecclesial Communities of the world Protestant, Orthodox and Anglican" . Struck by the age limit, it is replaced the 1 July 2010 as president of the pontifical council for BishopKurt Koch , previously bishop of Basel. In 2000-2001, he had a discussion with Joseph Ratzinger on the relationship between the particular Churches and the universal Church. Traditionalists of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X (SSPX) maintain a difficult relationship with him. It is generally appreciated by the ecumenical . It causes the controversy and its exclusion from the 16/09/2010 papal escort provided during the visit of Benedict 16 in the UK, saying: "When you land at Heathrow airport, sometimes you have the impression of having landed in a Third World country.
