Swami Vivekananda (Sanskrit means "discernment" and "bliss") ( 1863 - 1902 ), philosopher and spiritual teacher, has announced the Hinduism in the Western world. He was one of the leading disciples of Ramakrishna and founder of the Ramakrishna Mission His life

Vivekananda was born 12 January 1863 in Calcutta is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. Known also as the Narendranath Datta, he was born into a wealthy family. His father was a lawyer but also a philosopher. Her mother, very pregnant with Hinduism , he made known early sacred texts of India . He is very bright student and an outstanding student. The question of God is his main concern. He joined the Society of God "where intellectuals discuss the future of religions and the reform of Hinduism. At 17, he met the first time his guru, Ramakrishna , and after several meetings, Vivekananda is samnyasin (giving up) in the ashram of Ramakrishna.

Ramakrishna designates as his successor shortly before his death, during a long meeting, during which both have experienced ecstasy.

After Ramakrishna's death in 1886 , he became head of the ashram. On 25 December 1887 , on the night of Christmas, he founded the Order of Ramakrishna "thereby marking its relationship with the Christian religion.

In 1893 , with financial assistance from one of his disciples, he went to Chicago at the Expo. Without invitation, he asked to speak in Parliament of Religions and authorized to do so as the last speaker. The impression on listeners is important. Therefore, he gave lectures and creates many disciples to the United States. He went on a world tour to spread the teaching of Ramakrishna. His triumphant return to India. It creates the "Ramakrishna Mission" in various countries. He returned to the West in 1899. In 1900, he knows some health problems. It then works for the poor.

Vivekananda died at the age of thirty-nine years old on July 4th 1902.

His work

Made primarily of lectures, talks, talks, it was transmitted by a faithful disciple who took English notes in "shorthand". It was broadcast to the French public through Romain Rolland , who published a remarkable book on "The Life of Vivekananda and the Universal Gospel."

Vivekananda's work is important given the brevity of his life. She remained faithful to the teachings of Ramakrishna: religious and philosophical syncretism, bhakti yoga.

Some aspects of the thought of Vivekananda are perceived as traditional, others as very modern. If Vivekananda placed the Advaita Vedanta the top of the spiritual hierarchy, he stood out clearly from what he saw as a cosmic illusion and fatalistic quietism. Vivekananda wanted to change the world and not just individual liberation. In its way it is perceived by some as a revolutionary direct precursor of Shree Aurobindo. First, his thought is marked by positivism almost scientist. Vivekananda did not believe at all that the Vedanta contradicts the science of his time. For him, yoga is a spiritual science that complements what the West brings in terms of the physical sciences. This science of the mind is not to escape the world. It allows, as the physical , increase the power of man over the universe. It is a power, a force of transformation. Therefore, there is no question of rejecting the karma yoga for the sole benefit of Jnana Yoga. Knowledge without action is sterile and action without knowledge is blind and uncouth. As to bhakti yoga , he acknowledges that love is the highest form of knowledge, when the object and subject of knowledge are one. Partial Bibliography
