Virginal Conception

Virginal conception is the doctrine of biblical and Koranic that Mary conceived the Christ while remaining blank.

The term is less common, but often equivalent to the virgin birth and the idea that Mary's virginity was preserved during the birth of Jesus, and that comes from the Gospel of Matthew 1:25 (which says that her husband has not had sex with Mary during her pregnancy: And often, the expression of a virgin birth includes both the conception and birth.

We must distinguish this doctrine of the Catholic dogma of the Immaculate Conception , that Mary was preserved from original sin.

Virginal conception and virgin birth is a common belief in Christians and Muslims , even if all do not interpret it literally.

The Orthodox and Catholic extend this concept with the perpetual virginity of Mary , not accepted by some churches of the East and the Protestants.

Christian Perspective

The virginal conception of Christ by Mary based on various passages of the Old and New Testament :

  • Mt 1, 18 + ", yet before they have led a common life, she became pregnant by the fact of the Holy Spirit ... "
  • Lk 1, 34, "But Mary said to the angel," How is this going to be, since I do not know man? "
  • Is 7, 14 (version of the Bible)]: "Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son and shall call his name Emmanuel. "

However the interpretation of the virgin prophecy of Isaiah is disputed by some who oppose the Bible Septuagint (translated from Hebrew into Greek between III and II centuryBC. ), the Masoretic Bible (translated from Hebrew (written words without vowels which opened the field to errors of interpretation) in Modern Hebrew (words written with the addition of vowels to avoid known errors) by a group of Jews called Masoretes between the seventh and tenth century AD).

  • In the Masoretic version, the translation of the prophet Isaiah concerning the birth of the Messiah said that he would be born to a young woman ( - almah), the word does not specify whether this young woman is married or unmarried, virgin or not.
  • The Septuagint translates the same passage of Isaiah , saying that the messiah would be born a (parthenos = blank). This is consistent with the Gospel called Matthew who was drafted (~ 60 - 70 ), as the Bible of the Septuagint is the Greek-speaking Jews (like Paul) used, and which was therefore adopted by early Christians.

Jacques de Voragine explains in the Golden Legend ( XIII century ), "five proofs" of the Virgin Mary .

Muslim Viewpoint

Muslim tradition emphasizes the miraculous virgin birth of Jesus without a known father Joseph is considered a cousin of Maryam. According to Muslim tradition, Isa is actually created by kun (the "Be!"), The "divine imperative" and designed by a ruh of God, divine breath breathed into timeless Maryam, the same spirit that animates Adam and transmits the revelation to Muhammad , .

Sura III, The family of 'Imran , 37-42. 37.
