Victor Heal

Victor Gabriel Blackthorn is a French doctor and politician, born on 23 June 1777 at La Tour du Pin , who died at Vichy on 20 August 1853.

He studied at the Faculties of Medicine of Montpellier and Paris , he went doctor 1798. In 1799, the Executive Board asked him to join Napoleon Bonaparte in Egypt , where the plague was ravaging the army. But he was arrested by the British in Malta. He escaped, ran through the Spain and returned to Paris. He made a military career under Napoleon.

Returned to the capital, he worked the Annals of Millin , the Decade Philosophique, in which he endeavored to popularize the doctrines of Kant , to Fichte and Schelling. He was appointed in 1803, librarian of the School of Medicine of Montpellier , and in 1807 obtained the chair of forensic medicine of the same faculty. Commissioned by Jean-Antoine Chaptal under the Consulate, he formed essentially from revolutionary confiscations, an encyclopedic fund of wealth and an admirable consistency for the medical school of Montpellier: 900 volumes of manuscripts, medieval, 650 (59 from the Carolingian period and over a hundred thousand books printed before the nineteenth century - including 300 incunabula.

Then he took on the profession as a professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Paris.

His philosophical and political ideas are considered too liberal in 1815 made him remove from his post as librarian, and in 1819 for these same reasons, it was dismissed as a teacher. He then went to settle in Lyon where his talents and his reputation earned him a wealthy clientele. During the revolution of 1830 , he became mayor of Lyon , and the voters of La Tour du Pin sent him sit in the Chamber of Deputies. He then seemed to forget the liberal ideas they had previously professed to manifest a boundless devotion to the monarchy of July. He spoke to the hereditary peerage, and voted almost continuously with the department.

Not re-elected in 1839, he retired from politics and went to fill Vichy as an inspector of mineral waters. He became mayor of that city in 1848. Although he won a lot of money in the practice of his profession as physician, he left at his death in 1853, more than 200 000 francs in debt.
