Venerable (Catholicism)
A deceased person, having a reputation of holiness , will be called when the venerable "heroic virtues" of the person has been recognized by the Roman Catholic Church. The diocese can then initiate a trial for possible beatification and then a trial for possible canonization.
"The heroic virtues" means the efforts made by the person to become better, to accept the grace of God, to practice charity, to comply with the gospel and be faithful to the Church. This criterion is more important that the extraordinary facts, even miraculous, made over the life of a Christian whose cause is introduced.
Some Venerable:
- Franois Libermann (1802-1852), declared Venerable in 1910.
- Pius XII declared venerable in 2009.
- Frassati declared venerable in 1987, beatified in 1990.
