Valletta in the Maltese and English , the Italian History More specifically, the present capital of Malta is known as its French founder Jean Parisot de La Valette ( 1,494 - 1568 ) Grand Master of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. It's a year after the siege of the island by the Ottomans in 1565 that the new city will be erected on the hill Xiberras , a fortified city that can hold all military actions of the Ottomans (fortifications built after the plans of Francesco Laparelli ). The City Gate, City Gate, is the main entrance to Valletta. It was inaugurated during the independence celebrations in 1964 and was part of a project not yet completed, the redevelopment of the entrance to the city with the reconstruction of the Royal Opera House, destroyed in bombing in 1942. Triq ir-Repubblika in Maltese and English Street Republic (Republic Street) is the main artery of the city called Kingsway during the English colonization, Strada Reale by Italian speakers, Strada San Giorgio in the administration of the order Saint-Jean, the French renamed the Rue Nationale. It runs the entire length of Valletta, the city gate to Fort St. Elmo. The city has several churches, the best known is the Co-Cathedral of St. John (the work of the Maltese architect Gerolamo Cassar ), formerly the church of the knights. The capital is home to many monuments, including the former palace of the great masters nowadays Palace of the Republic, the President has his office and the Maltese Parliament sits. With 320 buildings on an area of 55 hectares, Valletta is the highest concentration in world history. Municipality The mayor of Valletta is Dr.Alexiei Dingli. He is a member of the Nationalist Party , which has a majority on City Council. Valletta is served by the Malta International Airport , located eight kilometers from the city. The public transport system in Malta, which uses buses, operates mostly on routes to or from Valletta, with their central terminus located outside Valletta. Traffic within the city limits, many streets are made of steep stairs and some main streets (Triq ir-Repubblika and Triq il-Merkanti) are completely pedestrian areas. On 1 May 2007, a plan to control vehicular traffic has been established. This system of control of vehicle access CVA - Controlled Vehicular Access - would reduce the long-term parking and promote trade in the city , . In the months that preceded the establishment of the system, 17,000 vehicles an average day are returned to the city. The automated camera system based on the automatic reading of license plates identify the vehicles as they enter and exit the charging zone between 8 am and 18 pm on weekdays and between 8 pm and 13 pm on Saturday. Outside this time and on Sundays and holidays the traffic is free. Drivers receive a free 30 minutes, beyond that, they are charged according to time spent inside the city with a maximum cost of 6.52 per day. Different rules and tariff exemptions in place would make the system evolve into a program of congestion charging on the model of London. But the mobilization of traders and small businesses, especially the resourcefulness of the Maltese is poised to derail the system operating costs exceed the amount collected. All the streets of the city is thereby subject to the scheme, with nine input controls (Triq il-Papa Piju V, Triq San Pawl, Triq San Mark, Triq il-Punent, Triq it-Tramuntana, Triq il- Fran, Triq il-Merkanti, Triq il-Mediterran and tal-is-on Inglizi) and six control outputs (Triq Santa Lucija, Triq il-Fran, Triq ir-Repubblika, Triq il-Mediterran, Bieber Victoria and is-on tal-Inglizi) alone, the streets along the fortifications and going around the city are beyond control. Parallel service shuttle is set up in 2006 by ADT - Autorita 'dwar il-Transport ta' Malta (Malta Transport Authority) - between the car park of Floriana and Misrah Helsen it-where from 2008 is the station of the urban electric taxis.
