Valdivia is a city in Chile with a population of about 145,000 inhabitants, founded by Pedro de Valdivia. It is located south of the country, at the confluence of the Calle Calle , Valdivia and Cau Cau , in the Rivers Region.
It is the capital of the province of Valdivia. Since 2 October 2007 , it is the capital of the new Rivers Region, which includes the province of Valdivia and Ranco Province.
During the War of Independence of Chile , she was captured by commando of 250 men led by Thomas Cochrane in the night of 3 to 4 February 1820.
Charles Darwin stayed there in February 1835 during his world tour. He attends another earthquake he describes in his story.
Valdivia is the seat of the Universidad Austral de Chile , founded in 1954.
In 1960, Valdivia suffered the brunt of higher magnitude earthquake ever recorded.
Landmarks
- The fish market, where the elephant seals travel with the expectation that the fishmongers give them the leftovers.
- Forts in the bay next to Valdivia, are the last vestiges of Spain. They were part of a network of forts built by the Spanish to protect one of the few safe sites for boats on the road from Valparaiso to Cape Horn.
