Uppsala, French Uppsala is a city in Sweden located 70 kilometers north of Stockholm , in Uppland , famous for its prestigious university , the oldest in Scandinavia. With about 180,000 inhabitants in the municipality which is the capital and 130 000 inhabitants in the metropolitan area, is the fourth largest city in Sweden after Stockholm , Gothenburg and Malmo (2005).

It is located after a fjrd (Fr. bay) from Lake Mlaren. River Fyrisn through the center.

Summary

History

Originally Uppsala was located a few kilometers north of the city present at Gamla Uppsala (fr. "Old Uppsala"). The location of today's city was then called stra Aros. According to Adam of Bremen , the old Uppsala was the center of paganism and the Swedes at this location would have been a pagan temple where the kings sacrificed to the gods of the old religion of Asar.

In 1164, about a century after the Christianization of Sweden, Uppsala is the city became the Diocesan Catholic archbishop of Sweden, and in 1274 the city was rebuilt to its present location.

After the Reformation , Uppsala has remained the center of the Church of Sweden , the Archbishop of the Swedish Lutheran church still resides in the city. This is the place in 1593 the synod of the same name in which Sweden adopted officially Lutheranism.

Domkyrkan , the cathedral, is with one of Trondheim 's largest church in the Scandinavian. Its red brick towers reach 119 meters. The Archbishop of Uppsala, Magnus Booson had brought some of Stephen Bonneuil French stonemason who worked on the construction of Notre-Dame de Paris. In 1287, Bonneuil obtained permission to Philippe le Bel to embark for Sweden, where he took with him a dozen workers. They worked on the sculptures of the south transept portal Celebrities
