Creation of Mirail
The university premises were designed and built by the team of architects Candilis, Josic Woods. Candilis George had added on request to the general architectural design of Toulouse 1960 : the Mirail.
The University of Mirail experiencing a precipitous rise due to the saturation of the old school downtown and the movement of May 1968. It is at that time decided to divide the University of Toulouse in three: the law school became the University of Toulouse I and resumed the old university buildings, the faculty of letters became the University of Toulouse-II called Le Mirail after his move, and the faculties of medicine and science become the University of Toulouse III, said Paul Sabatier. In 1969 was created the Fourth Toulouse University, the National Polytechnic Institute of Toulouse , a federation of engineering schools. After several openings appendices (including one located in a military barracks) in order to decongest the city center University, the University of Mirail gradually opens its doors in 1971 and 1973 , the move is almost completed in full. Provided for 11,000 students, Development of the University went beyond the forecast period, as it welcomes approximately 23,800 students.
Large areas of the university are "Arts, Humanities and Languages," "Human and Social Sciences," Science, Technology and Health. "
Architecture Project
The idea of Mirail university emerged in 1964, shortly after the establishment of the initial project of urbanization of the area Mirail worn by architects George Candilis , Josic and Woods. The initial plans date from 1966. The architecture of the university rests on a basic principle of horizontality. The buildings are never more than one floor. Building Organisation is structured around four main pedestrian thoroughfares that form a veritable backbone for the university. These roads are also covered a permanent link between the buildings creating a true structural unity between the different disciplines. These roads take up the idea of forming urban grid of streets within the neighborhood, allowing a rapid flow and creating building blocks. The buildings are made of blocks depicting the modular structure of concrete pillars and beams span, sometimes with a filling reminiscent of bricks the color of the pink city. These blocks are interspersed with courtyards allow natural light and creating spaces for nursing students. Some blocks have one floor and allow access to flat roofs. The university is based in part on a slab covering a parking lot.
Today, new multi-storey buildings were built - as the University Library, the House of Research, Dept. of History, the Ark, the cultural fabric and the Faculty of languages - and are elements the ongoing restructuring of the university.
