, higher education is developing especially after the Second World War under the leadership of Professor Henry Vizioz Faculty of Law at Bordeaux. At the Institut Henri Vizioz of Law and Economics in Martinique, are completed in 1963 a Centre of Higher Education and Scientific Center of Higher Education Literature, administrative and educational extension of the Faculty of Sciences and the Faculty of Letters of the Academy of Bordeaux. The Act of November 12, 1968 reshapes the administrative functioning of higher education in the Caribbean Guyana transforming the Centre for Higher Education Science, the University College Literary Institute and Vizioz in each Unit Training and Research (EBU ). On July 31, 1970 involved the establishment of the University of the West Indies and Guiana (CuAg). The University Center is intended to consolidate administratively EBU 4. It is a "public institution" enjoying legal personality and financial autonomy. It is placed from this point of view on the same plane as a University. However not educationally significant, it must enter into agreements with Universities in the city. On 12 April 1972, the University Centre Antilles Guyane elects its first President: Mr. Jacques Adelaide-Merlande , Assistant Professor of History at the EBU Arts and Humanities.
In 1982, following the decree founding the University of the West Indies and Guiana (UAG), that it can become a full-fledged university and learn from the other two UFR, and five new institutes.
The decree of 1988 and enact the 1991 creation, Guyana, respectively, then the IUT in KOUROU IES Cayenne.
Today, the ESU is spread over three areas inhabited by the French departments of America that are Guadeloupe, French Guiana and Martinique.

The University of the West Indies and Guiana is inserted in many partnerships and networks of academic exchanges .
Since 2007/2008, University of the West Indies and Guyana has also set up an integrated chain of Political Science in five years, called the program "France Caribbean" . Combining Sciences Po Bordeaux (France) and the University of the West Indies , Kingston (Jamaica), this program provides access to a triple master "Political Studies and International Cooperation." Location
The University of the West Indies and Guyana is located on three French departments of America:
- Guadeloupe: In Guadeloupe, on the campus of Fouillole at Pointe--Pitre, lies the headquarters of the University of the West Indies and Guyana. Nearly 6,000 students are enrolled. Guadeloupe is an archipelago in the Caribbean Sea, which lies 6700 km from France.
- Guyana: With its 1692 students, Guyana is the only French department in South America.
- Martinique: Martinique welcomes 5686 students, most of them are on the campus of Schoelcher. Distance of 6858 km from France, Martinique is located in the Lesser Antilles archipelago.
