The University of Tbingen (Eberhard Karls Universitt) is one of the oldest universities in Germany , located in Tuebingen. Founded in 1477 by Eberhard V of Wrttemberg , it is known, among other things, for his education in natural sciences (eg medicine) and philosophy. The humanities and natural sciences are structured into 7 faculties with 150 channels. While humanities faculties are located in downtown, the natural sciences are grouped on the heights ("Morgenstelle).
Formerly, Tbingen was best known for the excellence of its Institute for Geography and its Institute of Romance Studies (including the French language, the "Romance"). But several major Christian theologians are also derived, which Eberhard Nestle , Walter Kasper , Hans Kng and Ratzinger. The Evangelical Seminary of Tbingen has played an important role in the history of the university.
The university and the Protestant seminary (Stift), founded in 1536 have led to such figures as the astronomer Kepler and humanist Melanchthon. Wilhelm Schickard , who was the main precursor of mechanical calculation was in Tbingen. Friedrich Miescher discovered Here in 1869 the deoxyribonucleic acid or DNA. And Christiane Nsslein-Volhard won the 1995 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his work on embryonic development. The university is also a cradle of philosophy with idealist Hegel and Schelling , formed in Tbingen, who gave an extension to the thought of Kant.
The university collects about 23,000 students (one fourth of the inhabitants of Tbingen which is why a relatively young city) and 10,000 employees, including 450 university professors and 2,000 teachers / researchers.
