The University of Saint-Etienne, officially created on 27 March 1969 , is the pioneering institution of higher education Etienne , meeting in the university town of Saint-Etienne (who has a dozen establishments including the National School Superior mines Saint-Etienne ). It was in 1989 it was renamed University Jean Monnet , the founding father of European Community. Since 2007 , she is a member of the Center for Research and Higher Education (PRES) " University of Lyon , "which brings together 20 institutions from the universities of Lyon and St. Etienne.

History of the University
In the early sixties that develops at Saint-Etienne a university education. March 27, 1969 , the University of St. Etienne is formally established.
From the outset, in keeping with the times it sets up university teaching classical allowing it to present day almost all sectors and disciplines professionalized. The beginning of the 90s in particular saw the establishment of an engineering school and a second IUT at Roanne in addition to that from Saint-Etienne, as well as many professional degrees and graduate.
Since the beginning too, it focuses its efforts on continuing education and defines research niches in the original context of the Region Rhone-Alpes.
In 1989 , she took the name of Jean Monnet , the father of Europe. Faithful to him, she puts her degrees in 2003-2004 at the time by adopting the European system LMD (Bachelor, Master, PhD).
23 July 2008 , it is one of 20 pilot universities selected by the government to be autonomous. Thus, it manages its budget itself since 1 January 2009.
