The University of Poitiers is a French university located in Poitiers. It is one of two universities in the region Poitou-Charentes. It is multidisciplinary and welcomes nearly 24,000 students (2008) . It is currently chaired by Professor Jean-Pierre Gesson .

The University of Poitiers is an overall operating budget of approximately EUR 150 million per year a third for operating expenses and investment and two-thirds for personal expenses.

History

History

Traditional weapons of the University of Poitiers

The University of Poitiers is one of the oldest in France. It was founded in 1431 and willed by King Charles VII to reward the loyalty had always been the Poitou. Its creation is therefore the circumstances of the Hundred Years War , the occupation of Paris by the English that led to the exile of part of the University of Paris. On 29 May 1431 , a bull of Pope Eugene IV in authorizing the creation, effective on 16 March 1432 by letters patent of the King of France .

They are also professors at the University of Poitiers to Paris exiles who examined Joan of Arc to determine whether she was telling the truth about his voice.

The central documentation service of the University of Poitiers has a large collection of old documents (40 000). In addition, it is center acquisition and dissemination of scientific and technical information (CADIST) for the history of the Middle Ages , through the Centre for Advanced Studies of medieval civilization (CESCM).
