History of the University of Perpignan
Origins
King Pedro IV of Aragon founded the first university in Perpignan in 1349. This is the second university established in the crown of Aragon , after Lleida , founded in 1300. The city of Perpignan was until 1344 the capital of the kingdom of Majorca , meeting in the crown of Aragon by Peter IV The creation of the university can be seen as compensation for the loss of importance of the city. The University of Perpignan, then one of 25 universities in the world, teaches medicine , the law and the arts to over 400 students with a catchment area mainly Catalan. The university never came to prevail in the region, rivaled by the Universities of Toulouse , Montpellier and Lleida , the oldest and most prestigious.
Despite its relative obscurity, the university continued to operate throughout the Middle Ages and modern times. The attachment of Perpignan in the kingdom of France by the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659 affected his recruitment by limiting the Roussillon.
Reconstruction of the second half of the eighteenth century
In the year 1760 , the university buildings were reconstructed.
In good Freemason eighteenth century , the vector of Enlightenment thought , Augustin Joseph de Mailly renovating the university, between 1760 and 1763 , had built new buildings in Perpignan to overcome the ruins of the old.
On 31 March 1759 , a declaration of King Louis XV sets out the principles and modalities of implementation of the renovation of the university. Then, an order of 7 September 1759 lists the substantive provisions agreed to fund the work. Finally, the same year the construction of a new building was decided.
The facade of the building, done by a contractor Freemason, is built on the model of a Masonic temple. The work is funded entirely by the marshal who is a good way to attract the sympathy of the students. The property has a garden plant (bastion of the Capuchins), garden shrubs (bastion of France), a cabinet of natural history, physics cabinet, an amphitheater of anatomy and a public library. Because, at the same time he converted the old library in Central School Library. It is also driven in part by a donation of Marshal, which he bequeathed all his books . The Freemason Augustin Joseph de Mailly of Haucourt, omnipotent and omnipresent, has certainly provided the impetus needed to make new homes sociability did not hesitate to contribute his own money to facilitate their implementation .
Rector Louis Marigo-Vaquer expresses the July 2nd 1786 , before the general meeting of the university gathered for the unveiling of the bust Augustin Joseph de Mailly, the recognition of the institution in respect of his benefactor and his pride hold extensive collections of natural objects, alive or preserved.
The university continues to operate in 1794. After hosting the town library, the Museum of Fine Arts, the building was assigned to the municipal archives since 1980 .
From the Revolution to the Establishment of the University of Perpignan
In 1808 , Perpignan is not present in the decree Napoleonic Institute of faculties which in most cities with a university, which is probably due to the small size of the town and the university before 1794. It is no more concerned by the law of 10 July 1896 creates under the name "University" institutions formed by the union of the faculties of the same city. The permanence of the University lost memory has played a key role in the restoration of higher education in Perpignan, in the year 1950. The meeting of the Faculty of Letters of Montpellier accepts "a project for the creation of an annex to Perpignan. During this period, the General Council provides leadership in deciding to acquire 20 hectares of land and then sell it to the state for the construction of a university campus. The current university was founded in 1971 as a university center and it is in 1979 that the University has a range of both financial, administrative and educational, administered by the Board of Directors and headed by a President elected by the Council.
