The University of Nice Sophia Antipolis (UNS, formerly UNSA) is a French university , founded in 1965 , based in Nice and in the department of Alpes-Maritimes. It hosts 26,000 students, 1,300 doctoral candidates and 18% foreigners, spread over several campuses and units of training and research (UFR) . It has about 1,400 researchers and academics. Between 150 and 200 theses are defended each year.

The University of Manchester has eight faculties ( UFR ) of IUT , a PSI , a Polytechnic University and a IUFM. Since November 2008, the Observatoire de la Cote d'Azur is attached to it .

It is autonomous since 1 January 2010 . It was not accepted by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research within the last campus plan , but has been awarded the "campus promising ' .

Summary

History

Higher education appears to Nice in the seventeenth century. A panel of jurists , Collegium jurisconsultorum niciensium, was created in 1639 by the princes of Savoy . A school of medicine is also based at this time .

The vocation of the city asserted university then in the early twentieth century through the efforts of scholars like Louis Trotabas or Maurice Mignon that create, in 1933 , the Mediterranean University Centre (LUC), with the help of local including the mayor of Nice, led by Doctor Jean . Its first director is Paul Valery . An Institute of Legal Studies in 1938 , an Institute of literary studies in 1941 and an Institute of Science in 1945 are then based . A Faculty of Law and Economics, attached to the University of Aix-Marseille , is implanted in 1962 .

The University of Manchester was incorporated in 1965. She was then made by the faculties of arts, sciences, and law and economics . In 1968 , these three faculties are located on campus today . It was in 1989 that the university was renamed University of Nice Sophia Antipolis , referring to the science park neighbor . The headquarters of the university is established, since 1965 , in the park and castle Valrose .

Location

Campus

In Nice, the university has seven campuses, two of which are serviced by the tram.

The park Valrose , called Valrose campus houses the faculty of sciences. He can be reached by tram (stop Valrose University). It is located north of Nice in a historical heritage site. It houses research laboratories in basic sciences such as Mathematics Laboratory Jean Alexandre Dieudonn , the laboratory in developmental biology laboratories of physics , of chemistry and earth science, a laboratory astrophysics related to the Observatory Cte d'Azur, etc.. Campus Valrose also houses a university library, a cafeteria and a dormitory. Located on the campus, the castle houses the Valrose seat of the presidency of the university.

Campus Carlone hosts sections of letters , arts and humanities (history, sociology, ethnology). Built in the year 1960 , it is characteristic of the architecture of that era. It includes a restaurant, a library, student residences (residence Bay of Angels) and an indoor pool. The campus is served by bus line 22 (stop Saracen tower).

Campus Saint-Jean d'Angely consolidated the psychology and the humanities ( history , sociology , ethnology ). It houses the Faculty of Dentistry. Built in the year 1990 , it is served by tram (stop Saint-Jean d'Angely University). A MSH ( Maison des sciences of man ) and a library in SSH associated with MSH are being constructed under the Project Agreement State-Region (CPER 2007-2013). The library of history was at the other end of town, Carlone. Since summer 2009, the campus hosts the IAE and ISEM. The humanities have moved to re-Carlone. The construction of the library SHS is interrupted.

The campus Trotabas Louis hosts the Faculty of Law and Political Science as well as LEAD. It is situated on a hill overlooking the Bay of Angels. It has two villas (Villa and Villa Monique Passiflora) which houses the postgraduate courses and the LEAD ( Law Institute of Peace and Development founded by Ren-Jean Dupuy ). The Law School also hosts a mosaic of Chagall , "the message of Ulysses" was created in 1968. Nearby are a restaurant and the university student residence The Collinet.

The campus hosts the Plain Nice Faculty of Sport Sciences (STAPS: Science and Techniques of Physical Activities and Sports). The campus sports, built in 1995 and enlarged in 2010, is located on the plains of the Var , in the heart of eco-Valley-City Sports of the conurbation Nice Cte d'Azur, between the Nice Olympic Stadium, the future stadium de Nice Nikaia and palate.

Faculty of Medicine is located in a tower near the University Hospital Cancer Center Pasteur and Antoine Lacassagne. It supports research in the field of life sciences and health. Second ranking in the national examination, the medical school is equipped with teaching facilities and important relations of cooperation with the University of Harvard (Harvard Medical School) and many other medical schools in Europe and worldwide.

The IUT de Nice is located on the hill Fabron. It houses many departments.

The University of Nice Sophia Antipolis is located in Nice on seven different sites.

It is also present on the technology park of Sophia Antipolis in a campus STIC (Science and Information Technology and Communication), which gathers the Polytechnic University (Polytechnic UPR), two departments of IUT , laboratories Research antennas and Telecommunications (LEAT) and Computing (I3S), INRIA, Eurecom.

Other laboratories University Mixed- CNRS ( UMR ) are also present on the site of Sophia Antipolis , such as the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology, Geosciences-Azur (Earth Sciences), INLN (Physics), CEPAM ( story ) , GREDEG (law, economics, management), etc.. Finally the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis University of locations (departments of IUT ) at Cannes and Menton.

The university also has a low noise underground laboratory (LSBB) at Rustrel under the Albion plateau and is also located in La Seyne-sur-Mer and Draguignan through the IUFM which was incorporated into University in January 2008.

Management and Budget

Since 1 January 2010, the university is autonomous as more than half of French universities. She is managing her own human resources and receives a budget from the state 170 million euros per year for the payroll of 2,280 people . This allocation is in addition to the 40 to 50 million euros provided by the State to the University each year . It offers 3 levels of degrees (Bachelor, Master and PhD) and 4 professional orientations: Education Drive, Adapted Physical Activity and Health, Sports Training and Sports Management. The university is a center of research and higher education (PRES) Euro-Mediterranean border, which includes the universities of Genoa , Turin , South Toulon-Var , Corsica and Paris 6. The Euro-Mediterranean NEAR must allow radiation across the Alps-Mediterranean Euroregion , with an impact on all economic partners and academic partners.

The Observatory ocean of Villefranche-sur-Mer has 150 people, researchers, engineers, technicians and PhD . Under the direct supervision of the CNRS , it is an internal school of the University Pierre and Marie Curie.

Institut Robert Hooke scientific culture was created in 2004 within the University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis. It aims to develop an education "cultural" to popularize science and research done in laboratories . It hosts lecturers, researchers and school teachers to develop educational products with cultural content.

The laboratory zetetic University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis was created in 1998 by Henri Broch . It is dedicated to the study of phenomena "paranormal."
