The University of Neuchatel is a public university located in Neuchtel in Switzerland. More than 850 bachelors, masters, doctorates and degrees are issued each year. The university has more than 840 jobs (FTE).

Academic organization

The Rector

The Rector is the executive body of the University. He is responsible for overall strategy and is composed of the President and two or three vice-presidents elected for a period of four years. The general secretary of the university attended the meetings in an advisory capacity. The University Council

Faculties are each composed of a coordinated set of teaching units and research. Bodies are the Faculty Council of Faculty, the Dean and Faculty Council. The Dean directs and administers the Faculty. It is composed of three members, the dean, vice dean and a secretary. All are professors elected by the Faculty Council for a period of two years and may be reelected.

Faculty of Humanities

With nearly 1700 students, the Faculty of Humanities is the largest faculty of the University of Neuchatel. Faculty

This faculty has about 900 students in bachelor and master benefiting from modern facilities and infrastructure. The laboratories of the faculty are highly active in various research fields such as biology , the Biogeosciences, the hydrogeology , the geothermal , the computing and mathematics.

The Bologna system has been implemented since October 2004. The titles are awarded the Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Doctorate of Science. To address the possibility to opt for a multidisciplinary Bachelor "biology and ethnology" or "Science and Sport, programs targeted specifically for students intending to teach.

The Faculty of the University of Neuchtel heads the division of Research (NCCR) "Plant Survival in Natural and Agricultural Ecosystems." Four other universities in Switzerland (Bern, Fribourg, Lausanne and Zurich), the two Federal Institutes of Technology and three federal research stations are also participating.

Faculty of Theology

A historic building, headquarters of the prestigious Library of pastors, home to the Faculty of Theology. The universities of Neuchtel, Geneva and Lausanne, which met in the Triangle Azur, signed an agreement that sets up the Federation of theological faculties of their three institutions. Under the agreement, the three schools offer a Bachelor of Theology common (whose education is provided by the Universities of Geneva and Lausanne). The federation was replaced in 2009 by a less restrictive agreement. At master level, Neuchtel was chosen as a competence center of practical theology. The research focuses on methods of communication of the Christian faith in contemporary society and the development of pastoral action.

Training

At the University of Neuchatel, all faculties offer courses compatible with the Bologna model.

The Bologna Process is a European area of higher education and research and provides for harmonization of academic qualifications at European level. The system also provides for the allocation of credits (ECTS) for each course evaluated, in particular to promote student mobility.

The training system consists of two cycles (Bachelor and Master). Undergraduate university core, the bachelor is the first stage of basic scientific training, to acquire a way of thinking and scientific methodology. The bachelor degree is the prerequisite for further studies in a master's program. The course of study for its master aims to provide extensive knowledge and expertise to students.

History

  • 1837: The government asked the Neuchtel Prussian king Frederick William III the creation of an academy. He sent a brief to the Court on May 24, urging the king to grant the funds necessary to run an academy.
  • 1838: The King's Office creates the necessary funds (royal decision of 17 March). The academy is created.
  • 1840-1841: first official academic year
