It is the main institution of higher education in the region of Limousin. The University of Limoges is a component of the ESRP Limousin Poitou-Charentes (center for research and higher education regions of Limousin and Poitou-Charentes, approximately 50 000 students) and has acceded to the "enlarged powers" of universities ( applications LRU ) in January 2009. The semiotician Jacques Fontanille is president of the university. The chancellor is the president of the Academy of Limoges (riding teacher) appointed by the Minister of National Education.

Summary

History

In October 1968, a number of institutions of higher education in Limoges representing major areas of knowledge are incorporated into a university under the sole authority of the Ministry of Education. Some of these institutions while behind them a history of teaching and research in various forms making up the landscape of knowledge and the arts in Limousin, this tradition has its roots in the Middle Ages.

The Abbey of Saint-Martial de Limoges , founded in 848 (dissolved in 1791 by the Revolution), was already in Limoges and the surrounding region an important center of artistic creation (known by the generic name of " Limoges work "for the enamel ), literary (the troubadour ), musical (the tropes ), research (the " fire arts ") and technological innovation in Europe during the Middle Ages. Limoges had already from the VII-VI centuries and a training center known for the metalworking , where St. Eligius (c. 588 - 659 ) had apprenticed as a goldsmith and coin before becoming the minister of King Dagobert I and in which the neighboring abbey of Solignac was distinguished. Part of the library of the ancient Abbey of Saint-Martial is at the French Library Multimedia Limoges (Library of Great seminar about it today in the university library letters on the campus of Vanteaux).

Then it is 1626 that was the creation of the "Master Apothecary," and then in 1646 a "College of Medicine and Pharmacy" Processed, 1840 , in School of Medicine and Pharmacy. The board of directors of the University of twenty-first century headquarters in the Salle Saint-Alexis, a former chapel of the Hotel-Dieu (seventeenth century) related to the former School of Medicine. (Since 1972, faculties of medicine and pharmacy and the university hospital are located in modern buildings adjacent to the campus Vanteaux.)

In the twentieth century, the School of Law and Notarial becomes the Free Faculty of Law in 1927. The Faculty of Law and Economics of the twenty-first century occupies the site of the old Hotel-Dieu, the exact location of a square of streets in the ancient Roman town near the presidency of the University and the French Library Multimedia.

From the 1950s the university type higher education (that is to say associated with research, as opposed to preparatory classes or polytechnics) is organized according to traditional faculty structures in connection with the University Poitiers : In 1955 Medicine and Pharmacy, 1958 Natural Sciences, 1966 Law and Economics, and 1966 also Humanities and these institutions are integrated in 1968 as a component of the University of Limoges.

This new development is contemporaneous with the creation in 1965 of the Academy of Limoges (educational division) divided academies of Poitiers and Clermont-Ferrand. The locations of the University of Limoges cover the whole territory of the academy. Only university in the Limousin Region and the Academy of Limoges, so clearly identified with its natural space, it does not have a minimum net drawing power outside (international welcome center, rue Saint- Martial, managing the influence of the university, was established in 2008 in the old facilities for the selection and orientation of the Army).
