The University of Limoges is a French university multidisciplinary counting 14,000 students and 1,000 teachers, researchers and academics. It was structured in October 1968 through the consolidation of institutions of higher education in Limoges. It provides training to PhD and beyond (post-docs, empowerment (HDR)) in most traditional disciplines.
It is the main institution of higher education in the region of Limousin. The University of Limoges is a component of the ESRP Limousin Poitou-Charentes (center for research and higher education regions of Limousin and Poitou-Charentes, approximately 50 000 students) and has acceded to the "enlarged powers" of universities ( applications LRU ) in January 2009. The semiotician Jacques Fontanille is president of the university. The chancellor is the president of the Academy of Limoges (riding teacher) appointed by the Minister of National Education.

History
In October 1968, a number of institutions of higher education in Limoges representing major areas of knowledge are incorporated into a university under the sole authority of the Ministry of Education. Some of these institutions while behind them a history of teaching and research in various forms making up the landscape of knowledge and the arts in Limousin, this tradition has its roots in the Middle Ages.
The Abbey of Saint-Martial de Limoges , founded in 848 (dissolved in 1791 by the Revolution), was already in Limoges and the surrounding region an important center of artistic creation (known by the generic name of " Limoges work "for the enamel ), literary (the troubadour ), musical (the tropes ), research (the " fire arts ") and technological innovation in Europe during the Middle Ages. Limoges had already from the VII-VI centuries and a training center known for the metalworking , where St. Eligius (c. 588 - 659 ) had apprenticed as a goldsmith and coin before becoming the minister of King Dagobert I and in which the neighboring abbey of Solignac was distinguished.
