Old system

Created Dole

The first idea of a University of Franche-Comt in Gray back in 1287 to Otto IV , then ruler of the County of Burgundy. But it was not until 1423 that the Duke Philip the Good opens Dole University two Burgundies (the "Ducal", the current Burgundy and the "count", the current Franche-Comte ), which comprises three faculties: Theology , canon law and civil law, medicine. Faculty, primarily Comtois, is reinforced from time to time some "heavyweights" foreigners recruited for gold, including Italian jurists, including Anselm of Marenches and Nicolas Belloni, which give Dole international influence. In 1562, Dole has 268 students, including 45 foreigners and 223 Comtois. A century later, students from the Spanish Netherlands (Holland and Belgium now) are still numerous enough to be grouped into a "Flemish nation".

Transfer in Besancon

But Dole, punished for too long resisted the French conquest, lost its role as capital of Franche-Comte in favor of Besanon where Louis XIV transferred to the University in 1691. This transfer does not occur without difficulty: it was Louis XIV which provides grants to the University of operation, the city refused any financial assistance. Despite these difficult beginnings, the university, which consists of three faculties - theology, law, medicine - participates in the great development experienced by the city and province in the eighteenth century. A shadow is brought to the table, however with the opening in Dijon in 1723, a faculty of canon law and civil law, despite the promise of the King that there would be a University for two Burgundy ( Louis XV open later in Besancon Chair in Public Law, a true innovation in the realm of France).

Under Louis XVI , political crises, social, economic and financial, patent or latent, in the shadows relegate University whose resources are dwindling. The coup de grace is given by the decree of the Convention of 15 September 1793 which removes all the universities of the former regime.

the contemporary university

Napoleon restored the higher education through a few cases, however, a prestigious past: medical education is regulated, but the Academy of Besanon receives, officially, that the faculties of theology, science and letters, without obtaining School of Law. In fact, the Faculty of Arts is the only option comtoise until 1845, since theology is represented only by the courts of the Grand Seminary and the Faculty of Science, a victim of budget cuts of the Restoration, has remained at stage of the opening. In the academic year of 1845, under massive pressure from local dignitaries, Paris vote the necessary appropriations and the Faculty of Science may finally work.

In the late nineteenth century , thanks to the impetus given by the Third Republic, various arrangements and creations consolidate the University which, in particular, enriched by an observatory in 1882, and reorganized the school Medicine in 1889. The number of students, modest long (to the point that Paris makes repeatedly proposed abolition of faculties Besanon), begins to rebound and going from 180 in 1890 to 245 in 1900.

In the twentieth century , the university continues its path towards new conquests, sometimes hard-won. In 1920 she won with the help of the city, creating a law school (classes are taught by practitioners, judges, members of the Bar, officials ... and examinations passed in Dijon). In 1964 , the creation of a University College of Law, under the scientific supervision of the faculty of law at Dijon .

The sudden swelling of the workforce after World War II (600 students in 1938, 780 in 1945, 3,300 in 1963, 11,000 in 1972) permanently removes the threat of removal and to transform schools into full-year school Medicine (1967) and the College of Law (1968). At the same time, are created IUT (1967), the EBU Physical Education and Sport (1975), the Center for Applied Linguistics (1961), and construct the building up of the natural sciences Leclerc (1957), the Campus Bouloie (from 1962), while the Faculty of Arts begins its expansion on site, between the streets and Mgevand Chifflet.
