Summary

History

A first university existed between the twelfth century and the late fifteenth century to Billom , near Clermont, with up to 2000 students. In the early sixteenth century , the bishop of Clermont Thomas Duprat installs a university Issoire. The King establishes university in February 1519 , but following protests by Charles de Bourbon and the University of Paris , it is closed in 1520. In 1681 , the King authorized the creation of a medical college in Clermont but it's just a professional body unrelated to a university because it does not exempt educational and does not issue diplomas.

A medical school was founded in 1807 in Hotel-Dieu and becomes secondary school of medicine in 1820 . It remains to be reformed several times until its transformation into power in 1954. The Faculty of Arts was founded in 1808 , inaugurated in May 1810 in the hospital Charitains (demolished in 1906 ) but is suppressed at the Restoration in September 1815. It was not until 1854 that are created for a faculty of letters and science faculty as part of the national reorganization of higher education that sets up schools in all towns of the rectory. In 1896 was founded the University of Clermont-Ferrand, which includes the two existing faculties and schools of medicine .

During the Second World War , the University of Clermont-Ferrand hosted students and faculty of the University of Strasbourg which Marc Bloch , Jean Cavailles and Claude Wolff , fleeing the German occupation. The university was also severely affected: the 25 November 1943 , the buildings are surrounded by the Gestapo, with orders to arrest deans, students and those from Alsace-Lorraine could be related to the resistance. Nearly 50 students and teachers were arrested, and Paul Collomp , a professor of the Faculty of Letters, is even shot a gun.

Strong differences in particular political intervened in the implementation of the reform of 1969 ( Act Faure ) but it was not until 1976 that the university Clermont single split into two separate institutions, Clermont II retrieving letters , the humanities and the sciences , the natural and Technology , University Clermont I keeping it on the right , the economy , the medicine and an IUT. The University Clermont II then took the name of Blaise Pascal in Clermont honor of the scientist Components
