The University of California at Los Angeles (commonly known by the acronym UCLA, is the largest campus of the University of California for enrollment, but by a smaller area.

Summary

Geography

The Royce Hall , building inaugurated in 1926

It is located in Los Angeles in California between the neighborhoods of Bel Air , Venice and the city of Santa Monica.

When UCLA opened its new campus in 1929, it was only four buildings. Today, 163 buildings are spread over a campus of 1, 7 km 2 north of the shopping area of Westwood and just south of Sunset Boulevard.

The first premises were built on plans of the local firm Allison & Allison, in a Romanesque Revival style that was repeated in other buildings until the 1950s. Then, the architect Welton Becket oversaw the expansion of the campus for the next twenty years. This is especially to him that we owe one of the largest buildings on campus, the UCLA Medical Center .

The UCLA campus is decorated with sculptures, fountains and a sophisticated architecture.

Sport

UCLA Football

UCLA is also famous for its sports teams. In basketball, the UCLA Bruins have won 11 times and the NCAA college championship and trained NBA players like Lew Alcindor (now Kareem Abdul-Jabbar ), Bill Walton , Reggie Miller , Baron Davis , Trevor Ariza , Jordan Farmar , Russell Westbrook , Kevin Love , ....

Karch Kiraly , considered the best player in volleyball and beach volleyball of all time, is a former Bruin.

Traditions

The life of a student (e) Bruin is punctuated by many traditions, the most famous are perhaps:

  • Le Cri de Minuit every night (midnight) of the exam week, the tradition is that students begin to shout as loud as possible for one minute. This break is supposed to help release some stress accumulated during the revisions. Students who reside on campus are not allowed to participate in this event.
  • Race underwear Wednesday evening of the exam week, students are encouraged to wear their most beautiful - or ugly, it depends - underwear , decorated or not some fancy, for running through the streets and on campus , always with the goal of evacuating the stress of exams. The course is always the same but has been changed twice since the first race in the fall of 2001. The event is so popular that it is not uncommon to see television cameras do a story, especially as the large number of participants requires the presence of police in the university to ensure the smooth running of the race and avoid any dangerous activity or vandalism.
  • Summer camp at Lake Arrowhead: Each year the university organizes a camp in Lake Arrowhead , located at half past two in the east of Los Angeles. There, each family (one parent must be an alumnus of UCLA) may register and will normally be at camp every year the same week of the month (from late June until late August).
  • Activities: Swimming, skiing, tennis, basketball, baseball, art (pottery, painting ...), mini-golf, archery, fishing, tour around the lake, children's playground, evening entertainment , competitions, film and theater.

Inclusion of the campus in 2005

Total enrollment: 37,221 students

Undergraduate enrollment: 24,811

  • Women: 14,018
  • Males: 10,793
