The medieval university

Public schools have to Dijon Middle Ages a great reputation. Creation for both the University of Burgundy Dole (Dole then) in 1422, seriously undermines their because they are deprived of students and especially strangers.

At the request of the mayor and aldermen, supported by the Tremoille George, Governor of the province of Burgundy and his defense against the Swiss in 1513, Francis I of France (1515-1547) established in Dijon, a university with four faculties in 1516 but that decision remains unfulfilled, even though royal patents are very flattering for Dijon.

The College of Martinot or Martin (1531), in the current block from the Old College and the Jesuit college Godrans, founded in 1581 in fulfillment of the will of Odinet Godrans, President of the Parliament of Burgundy, trying with varying varying success to overcome this situation. The transfer from the University of Dole to Besanon in 1691 encourages states to seek de Bourgogne King of France to the creation Dijon university. The two cities became rivals then. Under the influence of the Prince de Conde, governor of Burgundy, Louis XV granted in Dijon, a university with four faculties April 17, 1722. Besancon replica with a genuine coalition with the University of Paris and several provincial universities. The king hesitates and then establishes a compromise.

The edict of December 1722 no longer creates a faculty of law (civil, canon and French) confirmed by a bull of Innocent XIII in 1723 and the university was inaugurated with great pomp November 24, 1723. The entire Parliament is to attend the meeting of the autumn. The First President berbisey leads the procession, surrounded by the nine presidents with their mantles of ermine and mortars, knights of honor, sixty-four councilors and five councilors clerics in ecclesiastical full costume.

The University, supported financially by the city and the province moved to the convent of the Jacobins and enjoys a reputation, despite the small number of students. The future President Brush, Guyton de Morveau, Cazotte Berlier or in part.

The five professors and three associate also exercise their profession and teach students whose numbers never exceed 200.

The university takes its schools and then assembled in the convent of Jacobins, which offers shelter very well suitable borrow. The convent was demolished in 1874 along with the vast church to which he wished to make room to the Halles covered market. There remains no trace.

The Academy of Sciences, Arts and Literature course there is also organizing public demonstrations of botany , of chemistry and materia medica.

The revolutionary turmoil prevails almost at the same time the University of Dijon (it closes in 1792) and the Academy of sciences, arts and belles lettres.

The University of Burgundy in the nineteenth century

When Napoleon began to reorganize the teaching, Dijon becomes the seat of a special school of law. The new facility will open in 1806 and became a faculty of law, by decree of 17 March 1808. The Faculty of Arts was established the same year and the Faculty of Science opens in 1809. At the same time opened a school of medicine and pharmacy.

Among the many buildings confiscated from Dijon during the Revolution, a wing of the old College of Godrans formerly built by the Jesuits is occupied, the ground floor only, by law school courses starting in 1805. Faculty of Science, the Humanities and the Rector should invest part of the Hotel Despringles, already occupied by the Academy of Sciences, Arts et Belles-Lettres. This situation lasted for over thirty years. The Academy will then leave the premises. The school of medicine and pharmacy is located, meanwhile, in a pavilion that was built for her in the general hospital.
