The University Montpellier 2, created in 1970 and heir to the University of Montpellier created in 1289 , is the pole Montpellier. The three universities in Montpellier have planned to merge by 2012 in one university Montpellier "south of France."

Summary

History

The creation of the Imperial University by Napoleon in 1808 brought about the emergence of a number of faculties of arts and science faculties in the major cities of the Empire.

Montpellier , who already had a longstanding medical school and pharmacy school, but also a Royal Society Science, renowned, established in 1706 , sees open in 1810 with a science faculty from seven chairs: Mathematics transcendent, astronomy, physics, chemistry, zoology, botany, mineralogy. These chairs were among twenty-seven in 1960 , before the establishment of a new organization of higher education in 1970.

In 1879 , the faculty is also present in Ste with the construction of a marine biology station and then, twelve years later, the Institute of Botany, still owned by the University of Montpellier 2. The Institute of Chemistry, created at the same time, became the Ecole Nationale Suprieure de Chimie de Montpellier in 1941 and received the title of administrative public institution attached to the University of Montpellier 2.

In 1964 , she left downtown and moved to a campus of thirty acres, north of Montpellier, which are built on 146,000 m2 of buildings for teaching and research. Then in 1973, the IUT landscape in a new campus north of Montpellier nine hectares, that of Nmes is built. More recently, two departments of IUT are arranged on Bziers and Ste.

In September 2007 , IUT de Bziers becomes an integral part, and in January 2008 , the IUFM Montpellier is also a component of the university.

The Heritage

The Institute of Botany (Rue Auguste Broussonet)

Heir to a prestigious history in the field of botany , University Montpellier 2 has retained ownership of the Botanical Institute of Montpellier (Rue Auguste Broussonet), created in 1889 by Professor Charles Henri Marie Flahault , and located Jardin des Plantes of the University of Montpellier 1. Become dilapidated and partially demolished after the Second World War , most of the building dates from 1956. The building still houses the prestigious Herbarium, second in France after that of the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris, with about 4 million samples and a large collection of botanical vellum due to the talent of Node-Veran , research laboratories in the field of ecology and parasitology (until 2009) and is also the seat of the PRES Universit Montpellier South of France.

The Marine Biological Station of Sete is a property of the university since 1879.

The collections of the UM2 contain objects still used for Research and Education, as the herbarium, while others have only a heritage collection ( zoology consists of stuffed animals in jars ... ethnology collection, astronomical instruments ...). They are scattered in several buildings on the site of the Botanical Institute. These scientific collections are managed and valued by the general service collections of the UM2.

In addition to these collections of objects, the university keeps in its library with rich collections of early printed books, manuscripts, and iconography: the case for example of the working library of Felix Dunal , bequeathed at the Faculty of Sciences in 1856 , the library of the Institute of Botany (deposited at the BU Science in 2000) and the Marine Biological Station of Sete are also important collections of old collections. They are publicly available on justified request.
