The University of Nancy-II, with 18,770 students in 2005, is a university multidisciplinary tour mainly to the humanities and society, which offers beyond the initial training, a wide range of training programs and lessons open learning and distance learning. It promotes traditional professional training and development and training in research.
The teaching staff of Nancy-II consists of 715 faculty members and over 900 professional contractors. Administrative staff are, meanwhile, 500 people.
At 1 January 2012, the University of Nancy-II entity should disappear to make way for a merger including the universities of Nancy and Metz. The desire is to create a larger structure with approximately 55,000 students within the University of Lorraine. There will be birth of one of the largest university city in France which will enable the University of Lorraine to qualify for larger grants for the renovation or creation of new arenas for example.

The first university
The first university in Lorraine was founded in 1572 by the joint commitment of Duke Charles III of Lorraine and the Cardinal Charles de Lorraine (1524-1574) in the nearby town of Pont--Mousson.

- Francois Geny (1861-1959), famous for his criticism of the method of interpretation based solely on the exegesis of legal texts and regulations, and associate dean of the faculty.
- Maurice Barres (1862-1923), writer, French Academician, member of Meurthe-et-Moselle (1889-1893), member of the Seine (1906-1923).
- Carr de Malberg (1861-1935), professor of public law
