Geopolitical situation

Around 1555 , the young prince of Transylvania , John Sigismund of Transylvania , ruled over a territory where a long tradition of hospitality has met the descendants of refugees Albigenses The schism by schism

In 1563 already, the doctor anti-Trinitarian Blandrata George had entered the courtyard of Cluj (Hungarian: Kolozsvr ). Gently, he probed the possible evolution of the prestigious Ferenc Dvid, presenting his views in private anti-Trinitarian. Dvid, indeed, proved open to a new stage of reform and took on him in 1566 , to declare without fear accepting theses Michel Servet , then to publish the following year a collection of texts anti-Trinitarian. In public debates, under the eye of Prince John Sigismund welcomed David brilliantly reversed the arguments of the orthodox and made new fans to the party anti-Trinitarian. Finally, in 1568 , the Prince, while confirming previous edicts of tolerance, "gives his subjects the right to join the faith of their choice."

A Church Unitarian was then created, including the prince himself was a member (the only case in history). At its head, of course, included the apostle of "Reform will continue," Bishop David. It remained in the Diet of 1571 that the task of legalizing the existence of four Christian churches: Catholic , Lutheran, Calvinist, Unitarian.

Compared to the Little Church of the Brethren Poles , the Unitarian Church of Transylvania was very similar but not identical, because less influenced by the Anabaptists. Indeed, the Unitarians do not refrained access to senior positions in the state, nor the carrying of weapons or the right to defensive war. Thus, under the reign of a prince himself a Unitarian, and also under his immediate successor, the Unitarian Church could prosper, and even branch out into neighboring Hungary.

Judgement of innovations

The historian notes that reform almost always results in the creation of a tradition hostile to future reforms. This was the case in Transylvania where Blandrata, became advisor to the Prince, won the legal prohibition of all innovation. Its purpose was probably to prevent any dissent among the Unitarians, as happened in Lithuania, where the Brothers had produced one, the sect of "non-worshipers." These were people who refused to worship the glorified Christ. The views of these non-worshipers reached Bishop David, who adopted them. A terrible conflict ensued between him and Blandrata in 1578. Socinus Fausto , called for help by Blandrata, talked all winter with David, with whom he lodged, but does not persuaded of error. Also in 1579 , while Socinus was already in Poland, David was he condemned and imprisoned. While in prison he died in prison in Deva.
