Umberto Benigni is a priest Catholic Italian and church historian, born 30 March 1862 at Perugia and died on 27 February 1934 in Rome. He distinguished himself by creating the Pine Forest in the reign of Pope Pius X , then by his rallying to fascism.
Summary |
Responsible for teaching the history of the Church in 1885, a year after his ordination, Umberto Benigni also devoted himself to journalism, first on a local level in 1893 before becoming editor in chief of National Catholic L'Eco d'Italia, located in Genoa. In 1895 a conflict with the Archbishop of Genoa did move to Rome, where he began working as an assistant in the research section of the historic Vatican Library. In 1900 began his contribution to the newspaper La Voce della Verita, he became director in 1901, the same year he also became professor of church history at the seminary of the diocese of Rome.
In 1902, he was given a place at the Roman Curia , and in 1906 he was promoted to deputy secretary of the Congregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs, which is at the root of the current Section Relations States of the Secretariat of State of the Vatican. He worked under the orders of Cardinal Merry del Val , before being replaced, March 11, 1911 by Eugenio Pacelli , the future Pius XII , he was known for his anti-Semitism.

Most contemporary historians of the Church bear a negative view of his activity and personality. They recognize his gifts of intelligence and organization, but they criticize his anti-Semitism, the coldness of his character and how to spy on its opponents within the Church. They are divided when it comes to how far Pius X knew of or approved of its initiatives.
