On the death of Decius, Trebonianus is cheering emperor by his soldiers. Probably to avoid suspicion of having caused the disaster in which Decius was killed, he decides to associate with the Empire the surviving son of Decius, Hostilianus with the title of Augustus , along with his own son Volusien receives that of Caesar. However Hostilianus Volusien dies soon after and retrieve the title of Augustus.

Trebonianus begins with negotiating a peace with the Goths. He bought their retirement against the delivery of supplies and payment of an annual tribute and abandoned the Roman prisoners. These conditions shocked contemporaries and yet do not prevent the Goths to stir again in 253. Trebonianus sends Volusien lead a new expedition. Locally, Marcus Aemilius Aemilianus , governor of Moesia, has several military successes and his men proclaim emperor.

Trebonianus load Publius Licinius Valerianus suppress this usurpation. But before arriving in Moesia , the soldiers of the last emperor designate.

Four suitors vie for the Empire and their armies met at Terni in Umbria: Trebonianus Volusien and are killed, then it's the turn of Emilien leaving the Empire alone Valerian.
