Theophanes The Cretan

Theophanes Strelitz ( ), nicknamed the Cretan Theophanes was a painter of the Cretan School active in the second half of the sixteenth century, especially in the field of mural painting.

He was born in Candia in Crete, then under Venetian rule, at an unknown date. It was probably formed on the island but all his known works are on the continent.

He has decorated the monasteries of Mount Athos and Meteora.

It should not be confused with Theophanes the Greek , another Greek icon painter active in Russia (1330-1410).
