Theodore Ii Lascaris

Theodore II Doukas Laskaris (January 1222 - August 1258 ) was Emperor Byzantine of Nicaea from 1254 to 1258. He is the son of John III Doukas Vatatzes and Irene Lascaris.

Gifted student of the learned Blemmydas Nicephorus , it attracts many scientists and cultivated minds.
Authoritarian, suspicious of the nobility, he governs based on a small group of bureaucrats like George Muzalon. He reconciles the people rising only moderately and only taxes to meet military obligations required by the constitution of a national army, but he alienated the clergy by appointing as patriarch Arsene Autorianos.

In 1256 , he signed a peace treaty with Bulgaria and then in 1257 he gave in marriage his daughter Irene (1244-1269) to the new Tsar of Bulgaria Asen Constantine I (1277).

The same year he married his other daughter, Mary (1258), to Nicephorus (1240-1296), son of Michael II , Despot of Epirus, but at the last minute, it requires as a condition for marriage Durazzo and Macedonian town of Servia. Michael II from a campaign soon and walk on Thessaloniki encouraging Serbs and Albanians to support him.

Theodore recalls General Michael Palaeologus , who not long ago accused of treason, had taken refuge with the Turks. It grants him a pardon but he reluctantly gives the command of troops operating in Europe against Michael II of Epirus.
While the forces of Michael II were at the gates of Thessalonica, he arrested Michael Palaeologus. He died prematurely in August 1258 Wife and progeny

He married in spring 1235 Helen of Bulgaria (1223 1254), daughter of John Asen II (1190-1241), Tsar of the Bulgarians , and had:

  • Irene Lascaris (1244-1269), married in 1258 to Asen Constantine I , Tsar of the Bulgarians
  • Marie Lascaris ( 1258/1259), married in 1256 to Nicephorus I , despot of Epirus.
  • John IV Lascaris (1250-1305), emperor of Nicaea
  • Theodora Lascaris ( 1273), married after 1258 to Mathieu Mons, Baron Veligosti, then in 1273 to Jakov Svetoslav, Bulgarian prince
  • Eudoxia Lascaris (1254-1311), married before 1262 to William Peter, Count of Ventimiglia ( 1278), then in 1281 to Arnaud Roger de Comminges, Count of Paillars.
