Theodore Ii Lascaris
Theodore II Doukas Laskaris (January 1222 - August 1258 ) was Emperor Byzantine of Nicaea from 1254 to 1258. He is the son of John III Doukas Vatatzes and Irene Lascaris.
Gifted student of the learned Blemmydas Nicephorus , it attracts many scientists and cultivated minds.
Authoritarian, suspicious of the nobility, he governs based on a small group of bureaucrats like George Muzalon. He reconciles the people rising only moderately and only taxes to meet military obligations required by the constitution of a national army, but he alienated the clergy by appointing as patriarch Arsene Autorianos.
In 1256 , he signed a peace treaty with Bulgaria and then in 1257 he gave in marriage his daughter Irene (1244-1269) to the new Tsar of Bulgaria Asen Constantine I (1277).
The same year he married his other daughter, Mary (1258), to Nicephorus (1240-1296), son of Michael II , Despot of Epirus, but at the last minute, it requires as a condition for marriage Durazzo and Macedonian town of Servia. Theodore recalls General Michael Palaeologus , who not long ago accused of treason, had taken refuge with the Turks.
