Talha Ibn Ubayd Allah

Talha ibn Ubayd Allah ( ) was one of the companions of Muhammad (one of the ten promised Paradise ). He played an important role in the battle of Uhud. He died during the Battle of the Camel in December 656.

Family

Talha ibn Ubayd Allah was a cousin of Abu Bakr and their great-great-grandfather's name was common Amr ibn al-Ka'b .

Youth (597-610)

Since he died at 64, he had been born in 597. Talha was one of the few residents of Mecca who could read and write at the advent of Islam. Though young, he accompanied the traders who made the trip to Mecca-Shaam caravan. During a trip to Busrah (syria) he met a monk who predicts the arrival of a prophet among his people called "Ahmad, son of Abdullah."

Time of Muhammad (610-632)

Arriving in Mecca his wife put him know that Muhammad ibn Abdullah was called prophet and Abu Bakr thought. He became a Muslim at age 18 through Abu Bakr, making it one of the first converts (the fourth), seven years before the Hijrah.

On one occasion, Nawfal ibn Khuwaylid have attached Abu Bakr and Talha ibn Ubayd-Allah with a rope . They should have their nicknames in this episode of Al-Qareenayn, "the two tied together" .

In 617, Talha ibn Ubayd-Allah followed Muhammad to Medina in the Hijra.

It took the family of Abu Bakr to Madinah during the Hijrah. In Medina, he stayed with As'ad bin Zurarah , who was among the first converts in the city.

He took part in the same battles that Mohammed, except the battle of Badr. Muhammad had sent him with Sa'id ibn Zayd to spy on army movements of Quraysh. They do not met and when they returned, the battle had taken place, won by the Muslims. However they got their share of the spoils.

He participated in the battle of Uhud. A source tells Sunni:

This time, the Quraysh had specifically targeted the messenger of Allah, Muhammad. Many important Ansar (Muslims of Madinah) and Muhajirun (Muslim emigrants from Mecca), the brave soldier of Islam Hamzah bin 'Abdul Muttalib, one of his cousins and an uncle, had obtained the Shahadah (the martyrdom) during the battle. Talha ibn Ubayd Allah and Abu Sa'd bin Waqqas remained close to the Messenger of Allah, Mohammed, and protecting their bodies.
Sa'd bin Abu Waqqas trying to keep the enemy at bay by firing arrows. Talha ibn Ubayd Allah literally played the role of human shield before the messenger of Allah, Muhammad, against the attacks of Quraysh. He was seriously wounded but continued to defend him. He lost two fingers cut off by a sword, one arm was immobilized by a spear stuck in his palm, he received a deep wound to his leg and was hit in the head by two spears. He had lost a lot of blood but continued to defend the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad.
Talha ibn Ubayd Allah had received a total of 70 injuries. The Messenger of Allah, Mohammed, said he had obtained the Shahadah during his lifetime and called him a Shaheed living (living Martyr).

Finally he participated in the farewell pilgrimage.

Era of Omar (634-644)

The second caliph , Omar ibn al-Khattab , made him a member of the council to appoint his successor composed of `Ali , Talha, Zubayr and `Uthman. After the death of Omar deliberations lasted three days, `Uthman, who was elected in November 644 .

Time of Uthman (644-656)

Residents of Egypt rebelled against Uthman and against the governor. They had begun to make contacts in Basra and Kufa to depose the caliph and replaced by one of their candidates to say 'Ali , Zubayr and Talha. The son of Talha, Muhammad was a friend of `Uthman and he informed the rumors to Medina on the conspiracy. Uthman son called 'Ali, Talha and Zubayr to warn them. During this interview, 'Ali Uthman blamed for using too liberally from the public treasury for the benefit of his family. Uthman promised to return the money.

The insurgents were divided on the choice of a replacement of `Uthman and those of Egypt were for` Ali. They handed him a letter outlining their project, 'Ali sent them away. Insurgents from Basra had candidate for Talha, he received the same refusal.

Met `Uthman 'Ali asked him to send off the insurgents, in part against what he would do that' Ali would be recommended. Marwan bin al-Hakam sent a false message with the signature of `Uthman, commanding the governor to suppress the insurgents on their return to Egypt. The message was intercepted and the insurgents are retraced their steps to Medina to put `Uthman in charge. Marwan then succeeded in making him believe that 'Ali was responsible for this provocation.

The insurgents besieged the house of Uthman who dare go out Talha undertook to lead the prayer in his place. The insurgents set fire to the house and were sacked. Uthman died during the sacking (17 June 656 ). Three days later he was secretly buried in the cemetery of the Jews to escape the vengeance of the mob .

The appointment of the new Caliph 'Ali put in the presence supported by the people of Egypt, supported by those of Zubayr and Talha Kufa supported by those of Basra. 'Ali immediately received the support of Medina. He asked Talha and Zubayr to swear, which was done on June 24 656 ,.

Era of Ali (656-661)

Talha was one of those who fought in 656 the fourth caliph ( Ali ibn Abi Talib ) to the Battle of the Camel , to avenge the assassination of Uthman. During the fight, he was struck by an arrow, drawn by some one of his own soldiers, Marwan ibn Al-Hakam. He was taken to safety and later died of his wound, aged 64 , , .

Progeny

From his marriage with Hammanah bint Jahsh , sister of Zaynab bint Jahsh he had a son named Muhammad ibn Talha , who also died in the Battle of the Camel.

From his marriage to Umm Kulthum bint Abu Bakr , he had three children:

He also had a daughter named Umm Ishaq bint Talhah. She married al-Hasan ibn Ali and had a son named Talha ibn al-Hassan. After the death of her first husband, Umm Ishaq married his brother Al-Hussein ibn Ali whom she had a daughter named Fatimah bint al-Hussein.

Sunni Viewpoint

The Sunnis consider him one of the ten whom Muhammad had promised during their life paradise. They see as a hero after defending the Prophet of Islam risking his own life.

Shi'a Viewpoint

The Shiites have ambivalent views about it. On the one hand, he was an ardent defender of Islam, fighting alongside Muhammad and Ali. But on the other hand, he challenged the leadership of Ali and broke his oath of allegiance to him according to them.
