Synagogue Stobi

Stobi Synagogue is a Jewish place of worship of the ancient city Stobi in Macedonia , located at the site of a Christian basilica later, called "Central Basilica, and a late antique mansion," Maison of Psalms. "

Summary

/ / The synagogue Polycharmos

The remains of a synagogue were first unearthed in the central nave of the church of the fifth century and are just a floor and a door threshold . The other pieces mentioned by registration include triclinium (banquet room) and a tetrastoa, namely a quadrangle which is probably the atrium of the house. Cl Tibrios Polycharmos bears the title "father of the synagogue," which may be a reference to an official function within the institution synagogue rather than his status as patron and benefactor of the community .

The timing of the operation is problematic because of damage to the first line of the inscription which indicates either the number 111 is the figure 311, which must then be converted by computation of the era used locally: Dates of 79 , 163 and 279 have been proposed . Dating to the late second century or early third century seems more in keeping with palaeography and archaeological data.

The first synagogue is a large part remains paticulire licensed for use by the Jewish community by his owner, who continues to reside with his family in private apartments on the floor . The building of worship is relatively modest dimensions (15 x 15 m) comparable to those of the synagogue of Dura Europos.

The second synagogue

The second synagogue was built to replace the first, destroyed, probably early fourth century. It consists of an assembly hall of 13.3 x 7.85 m, equipped with a mosaic floor with geometric patterns. It would have been destroyed at the end of the fourth century.
