The Rykestrasse Synagogue is the largest synagogue in Germany. It is located in the district of Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin. After a year of work to restore its luster before the war, it was inaugurated on 31 August 2007.
History
Built in 1904 , it is a large brick building of Romanesque Revival style. The synagogue could then accommodate 2,000 worshipers. She was devastated by the Nazis during the Kristallnacht Nov. 9, 1938, which burned. But as she was in a densely built area, the fire was quickly extinguished by firefighters. The building was then used as a stable and then as a warehouse. In 1945 , he again became a place of worship for the small Jewish community of Berlin, but located in East Berlin , she was neglected by the communist regime of East Germany, was neither restored nor maintained.
The synagogue was renovated during 2000 and was inaugurated at a ceremony Friday, August 31, 2007 in the presence of many German officials. Rabbi Trepp lzo, aged 95, who had officiated at this location until 1936 it held a speech.
Today, the Jewish community of Berlin is 12 000 people, spread over eight synagogues.
