Synagogue De La Paix

Synagogue de la Paix or synagogue consistory of Strasbourg is both a religious building, located in Strasbourg in Alsace (in the posh neighborhood of Contades), and the Community Center Jewish in the same city. It was built in the aftermath of the Second World War to replace the synagogue Wharf Kleber destroyed by Nazis on 12 September 1940.

Summary

After the destruction of the community Israelite of Strasbourg , a few survivors got together in 1945 to rebuild a religious community. Until 1948 , the ORT school, then the Palais des festivals, served as an oratory. At that time, the city began providing the former Arsenal, Place Broglie , serving the Jewish religion.

Talks engaged with the town of Strasbourg from 1948 to 1952 where the Jewish community agreed to offer the land wharf Kleber cons plot - equivalent in size and overlooking the "Rue de la Paix" (hence the name of the building).

The project of reconstruction of a synagogue in Strasbourg was given to Charles Ehrlich in May 1950 (then President of the Administrative Commission). Following a competition, the choice was focused on the person of the architect Claude Meyer-Levy (1908-2008) - assisted by Jean-Paul Berst and Rene Heller, after the brief involvement of Gustave Stoskopff .

Work began on 23 August 1954 was not completed with the official opening on 23 March 1958.

Production

General

The synagogue of Peace takes a modern style whilst retaining traditional symbols.

The vault in the nave is supported by twelve columns and concrete representing the twelve tribes of Israel.

His plan is basilica.

The western portal is itself a continuous network of Star of David Iron, made by the ironworker Gilbert Poillerat.

The configuration of the building includes a community center and several cultural shrines.

Oratorios

  • Salle Ren Hirschler : Room 1658 seats. The office is charged according to the rite Ashkenazi. Note also the presence of an organ and a choir.
  • Merkaz room: Room narrower than its predecessor, the Office is performed according to the rite Ashkenazi.
