In 1875 , Jews from Bordeaux , of Bayonne and Venaissin County then decided to build their own temple Description of the synagogue

The architectural style of the synagogue is very close to that of two other major synagogues built in the same period, the Synagogue de la Victoire and the synagogue Tournelles. The journal of the Universe Israelite described in June 1877, the synagogue which had just opened:

"

The upper part of facade is formed by two large concentric arcs, supporting a pediment crowned by the Tables of the Law. The total height of the facade of the ground at the height of the Tables of the Law is 22.50 m An inscription in Hebrew text cites Bible : "Blessed are arriving or leaving blessed" (Deut, xxviii, 6) The monument street Buffault is a masterpiece of architecture, the architect Stanislas M Ferrand deserved Israel. The facade is beautiful, elegant porch first. Before entering the temple itself, it passes through a second doorway which gives access to six arched doors facing each other. The interior of the building with 650 seats, is both rich and harsh. The nave is wide, but the curve is not pronounced enough, it is a cause of inadequate acoustics. The aisles are six arches supported by columns of marble white. Above the galleries are reserved for ladies.

The bimah

The Tabernacle has great proportions. A small gate in wrought iron separates it from the public. Two gorgeous red velvet curtains that form when the door opens our eyes to hide the holy place. The Thamid finely chopped honors donor's widow Mrs. David Leon. In front of the tabernacle and superimposed on the second porch is a forum whose bottom part is reserved for the organist and master's and the front part of the public. Chandeliers and candelabras are beautiful. We especially noticed the chandelier with 8 branches. A railing surrounds stone Thebes. Ceiling, four rosettes occupy the four central parts of the nave. The Tabernacle is surrounded by marble topped by a fifth rosette that deserves to be described: the stone-carved figure of the day clouds and rays; behind glasses that were skillfully combined various shades yellow, and finally in the center, Tables of the Law such as tradition, has brought Moses descending from Sinai. This rose represents the sun emerging from the Tables of the Law and piercing the clouds.

Note that the Temple is facing Jerusalem as tradition dictates. "

The dispute with Osiris

Osiris has made a very significant sum for the construction of the synagogue wanted to impose the placarding of thanks, ignoring other donors. The community protested, leading to legal proceedings before a court settlement. One of the plates which laid the most concern to the community and the rabbis, is where Osiris tribute "To the illustrious sons of Israel." If most of the names has not been a problem, however the rabbinate refused to be mentioned that the names of Baruch Spinoza because of his heresy and Heinrich Heine because of his conversion to Protestantism.

Below these Jewish figures, Osiris mentions the names of "Great French citizens defenders of Judaism" supporters to give full citizenship to Jews living in France (Decree of 28 January 1790 by the National Assembly ).

At the bottom of the plate, Daniel Iffla Osiris tribute to his parents, his wife and his children, and close friends. Again, the rabbinate has some reservations, like the fact that Osiris had mentioned the name of his wife, who was Catholic, under the name Youth (Carlier) and not under her married name, but finally gave in on this point.
