Surat

Or a sura Sura (Arabic: sura , , pl. Surat, , "Sura; row of stones wall") is a unit of the Qur'an consists of a set of verses. The word sura is often translated as "chapter" by comparison with the chapters of books in the Bible , except that they are not in the Qur'an in chronological order.

The Koran consists of 114 suras of unequal length: the shorter contains 3 verses ( ayat ) and the longest 286. They are presented in order of decreasing length significantly, not in chronological order in which God would have revealed to Muhammad. The first, the Fatiha is however very short and has a special status. Called "The Prologue" by translation of the term fatiha, it is as an invocation and is recited at every prayer.

Scholars have distinguished two broad categories of suras: those that correspond to the period Makki , and those of the period Madani. The part relating to the Meccan period of the report generally deals with God , the faith , spirituality , Islamic beliefs List of Suras

The suras are given in the Quran in any particular order, since they are not listed in chronological order. They will appear in an order of magnitude, from longest to shortest. Only the first surah, consisting of seven verses called Al-Fatiha () remains in first position as it is the "opening" or "prologue" of the Koran.
