In the synoptic gospels ( Gospel of Mark , Matthew and Luke ) and the book of Acts of the Apostles , John the son of Zebedee and Mary Salome , is a leading twelve apostles of Jesus. He is also the brother of Jacques le Majeur. They were from the town of Bethsaida in Galilee.

His name does not appear in the Gospel of John , but is generally identified with an unnamed disciple, and designated by the term the disciple whom Jesus loved. In Christian tradition, ascribed this Gospel and three epistles and the Apocalypse , which the author presents himself as John of Patmos is the Johannine corpus.

It is called John the Apostle or John the Evangelist John the Theologian or to distinguish John the Baptist. His symbol as an evangelist in the tradition of Tetramorph is the eagle, hence the nickname "Eagle of Patmos."

He is represented with a cross surmounted by a snake or a boiler filled with boiling oil.

St. John the Evangelist is celebrated by Catholics on December 27 and the Orthodox Church on September 26 ( Dormition ) and May 8.
