St. Anne Church is a Catholic of Jerusalem , located in the Old City.
History
As the Basilica of the Pater Noster (or Eleona) on the Mount of Olives is one of four French territories in Jerusalem (the other two are the Tomb of the Kings , and the Benedictine Abbey of Abu Gosh. She is currently assigned to the " White Fathers. "It is right next to the archaeological site of the pool Probatic.
According to the Byzantine tradition, the crypt is located at the place of the home of Anne and Joachim, parents of the Virgin Mary. A Byzantine church was built there in the time of the Empress Eudocia dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It was destroyed by the invading Persian in 614, then rebuilt and again destroyed in 1009 by Al-Hakim. The present church, in Romanesque style , was built by the Crusaders in 1140 and was immediately dedicated to Saint Anne. After the conquest of Jerusalem by Saladin , the church was transformed in 1192 into a school of Islamic law.
In 1856, after the Crimean War , France was awarded the Church of Sultan Abd al-Majid in gratitude for its assistance to Turkey. Sainte-Anne was then restored and the French government gave in 1877 at Bishop Lavigerie and the Society of Missionaries of Africa. Between 1882 and 1946, the place housed a seminary for training priests Greek-Catholics.
