Srinagar Srinagar or ( Urdu : , Kashmiri : ) of Sanskrit meaning "holy" by some and "abundant wealth" according to others Nagar mean "city", is a town in north western India , winter capital of the State of Jammu and Kashmir , the summer capital is Leh.

Srinagar is located in the valley of Kashmir , at 1768 meters above sea level on the Dal lake formed by the river Jhelum and its tributaries.

Climate

Srinagar enjoys a climate much colder than most of India because of its location. The city occupies the northern end of India and is a high altitude. The winters are quite cold while the summers are warm without being hot.

History

Srinagar was founded by Ashoka as the Meruvardhana-svmin.

Boasting a mild climate, it has always been a popular stay away from the sweltering heat over southern India, and its network of channels has made it sometimes nicknamed the " Venice of India ". Long popular tourist destination, the events in Kashmir have dealt a fatal blow to his attendance.

On 1October 2001 , a suicide bomber struck the Parliament of Jammu and Kashmir in Srinagar, which killed 38 people Places and monuments

Srinagar is famous for its houseboats, boats residential development often luxurious, on the Dal Lake, as well as for its beautiful wooden architecture quite characteristic.
