Solomon Alkabetz
Rabbi Shlomo ben Moshe HaLevi Alkabetz ( 1505 , Thessaloniki ( Greece ) - 1584 , Safed ( Israel )) is one of the greatest Kabbalists and poets mystics of his time.
Author of piyyout , liturgical poem, Lekha Dodi. He was a contemporary and friend of Rabbi Yosef Karo , author of the Shulchan Aruch.
His commentary on the Book of Ruth , Chorech Yishai, published in 1561 , is quoted by almost all commentators who follow Ruth. It is often quoted in Igueret Shmuel, Dima Lehem and other commentators who refer to him by many names: "Rashba HaLevi, Rabbi Shlomo HaLevi", "Ibn Alkabetz Harav.
He sent his father-in his commentary on the Book of Esther , Manot Halevi, he had finished, as a mishloach Manot (gift of Purim ) that year. We received the gift with enthusiasm and as gifts more precious than gold and silver.
He wrote commentaries on almost the entire Bible , the Haggadah of Pesach , the Kabbalah , and was an important Patane (author of liturgical poems). His commentary on Shir Kabbalistic Hachirim ( Song of Songs ), Ayelet Ahavim, was published for the first time in Safed in 1553.
His piyyout Lekha Dodi talking about people's suffering Jew and his aspirations for redemption. No other Piyout probably has reached the popularity of Lecha Dodi, and is recited every Friday night by all Jewish communities in the world.
