Any religious society or institution has its own vision for what is considered the world around them and how to behave towards the latter. On this page, it is to study the specificity of social relations of Jehovah's Witnesses: first among themselves and with non- Jehovah's Witnesses , then towards the activities proposed by the company.
Summary |
Education of the Child
In France , the parliamentary report of 1995 ranked the movement of Jehovah's Witnesses in the sects who practice "the indoctrination of children in a more or less insidious." Critics , sometimes with the aid of sociological surveys . For example, a survey commissioned by SOFRES Jehovah's Witnesses and conducted in October 1998 revealed the following: "The medical care of Jehovah's Witnesses do not reveal any atypical behavior: 97% with a doctor whom they usually call and 78% having been hospitalized, "the level of education interviewed , discusses the Jehovah's Witnesses regarding packaging and criminalization of children (pp. 24 and 36), the busy schedule of these children (p. 25), the evangelization indirect school (pp. 26 and 27), psychological problems that would result from "the separation from the world "(pp. 29 and 30), the failure of autonomy development (page 32), the risks of non-reporting of child sexual abuse (pp. 39 and 40), psychological difficulties of the output of the movement (p. 51), the problem of blood transfusions (pp. 65-68 and 129 and 130).
It is interesting to note the testimony of officials of the Ministries of Interior and National Education , heard by the Commission.
Didier Leschi, Chief of the Central Bureau of Religious Affairs , Ministry of Interior , heard on October 17 2006 , declared:
"The Central Bureau of Religious Affairs , we believe that we must address issues of public policy with the greatest rigor and focus on facts rather than rumor or word of painful old faithful out ... (...) Never incident . The members have even accused Didier Leschi, chief of the Bureau of Religious Affairs , to "collusion with the Jehovah's Witnesses," showing that its position is at odds with that of his Minister Nicolas Sarkozy , after reading a letter from the latter to his colleague Minister of Health , where he reported the infiltration of Jehovah's Witnesses in the medical community that reach, he said, worrying levels . The parliamentarians also noted that the position of Mr. Leschi is inconsistent with that of Jean-Olivier Viout, Attorney General at the Court of Appeal of Lyon , who during his hearing was very clear on the issue of refusal of transfusion Blood regarding minors: in this case, the refusal of blood transfusion is well constitute a disturbance of public order in terms of floor .Peter Polivka, Inspector General of Education , member of the Unit for the Prevention of phenomena sectarian , and Jean-Yves Dupuis, Inspector General of the Administration of National Education and Research, both of them interviewed on 10 October 2006 , said:
"We never had any report of teachers, parents, elected officials, alerting us about the behavior of children of Jehovah's Witnesses. Often they are children who are particularly well suited to our school organization for students who are in school poses the fewest problems and say things as they are. (...) :"Many witnesses have reported the psychological pressure that weighs on Jehovah's Witness children, educated in public schools and who are asked to" learn and recite something in what they are told not to believe. (...) Their situation is even worse than those that evolve in a closed school "(1). Describing the continuing obligation of concealment "considerable pressure", Mr Emmanuel Jancovici (2) has lamented the effect it has on the mental health of these children, like Mr. Nicolas Jacket (3). However, for national education, children of Jehovah's Witnesses "are the students 'perfect'. They are well disciplined, they work, it is not with them that we will have problems "(4). Therefore, even if teachers are sensitive to the conflict of loyalty that these children torn between school and home, they do not know how to proceed and not sure of the presence of real danger, they do not Reporting to the prosecution (5). It is therefore hoped that in the cases where Article 5 of the draft law on the reform of child protection (AN, No. 3184) was adopted (6), they will feel encouraged to make it easier their testimony to the social services department. "With those who were taken spiritually
Attendance is restricted to Jehovah's Witnesses who are considered by their community as vessels of vulgar use (a Jehovah's Witness who has committed a sin punishable by excommunication is not 'noted' by the elders who warn that the community should not more frequent outside the cult until further notice). Formal prohibition to greet, eat with an excommunicated who is not her own family carnal under penalty of excommunication if there is no repentance.
Investing in the community
There are several religious activities which the faithful Jehovah's Witness must attend a minimum four hours of meetings over two times, (the meeting on Thursday evening was abolished in January 2009 for economic reasons) to preach at least once a month not to be considered "inactive" means the preparation of all meetings, Bible studies, family weekly, daily reading of the Bible and look at the brochure the Scriptures every day (which includes a daily Bible text and commentary) that need meditating, reading the news publications of the Watchtower Society (whose latest periodicals and books published in the district assembly , personal study. There are often calls for voluntary (cleaning or repairs to the Kingdom Hall, the Salle assemblies ...) The former have a busier schedule, since they must prepare presentations or speeches they present, make pastoral visits (visits to support patients, inactive elements of the congregation ... ), and participating in numerous meetings of the college of elders. As a result, often, the faithful of the religious movement cotoie much his co-religionists.
As a result, some critics put forward the idea that, in addition to the 'secular activities' classic (work, housework, etc..), A Jehovah's Witness has little time for anything else and did not get to to take a step back to question.
Relations with non-Jehovah's Witnesses
Relationship with those who have never been Jehovah's Witnesses
From 1922 , the religious movement has developed a policy of social breakdown assumed: Jesus has made 1918 his duties at the Temple of God , chose the Jehovah's Witnesses of that time to be his representatives. He has introduced the temple for they are proclaiming his message of condemnation and hello, and was anointed at the time . Ambassadors of God in the midst of the satanic world and become the equivalent of the Levites of the time of Israel , they must have the same purity that they during their service in the Temple, and therefore must be purified of all defilement and all spiritual contamination that would come from outside. The world belongs to Satan , even the good people and humanitarian projects are ultimately his diabolical plan of expulsion of mankind from God. Currently, particularly since the early 1990s , while continuing to proclaim that "the world is in the power of evil" according to 1 John 5: 19, the movement assumes as before his break with the world and instead insists on integration of Jehovah's Witnesses in the community, however, several features remain present.
For example, attendance at non-Witnesses should be minimized. It must usually be limited to reports in the workplace or at preaching, not to be contaminated by the spirit world.
Practice of excommunication
Main article: Excommunication among Jehovah's Witnesses.Their attitude towards "outsiders" now called "excommunication" is debatable. Their doctrine is based on the verse Bible 1 Corinthians 5:11:
"But now I am writing to cease to attend the one called brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or insulted, or a drunkard, or an extortionist, and not even eat with such a man. "This encourages the faithful to attend and not to associate with someone who has left the movement or who has been excommunicated, not to engage in friendly conversation with her, or even, in principle, to greet her. This ostracized from the community is more difficult to live that Watchtower Society advises its followers to limit their relationships with people outside world . Some find themselves excommunicated very lonely and very difficult to handle the eviction. Although rare, cases of suicide attempts or suicides that occurred after a reprimand religious or excommunication are also reported .
Ex-Jehovah's Witnesses who testify publicly about their experiences in this movement report that contact with family of Jehovah's Witnesses is made very difficult at best when it does not fall into the break all contact, including in exceptional circumstances such as a marriage or death .
It seems that some Jehovah's Witnesses take it upon themselves not to follow the letter of the instructions issued by the Watchtower Society , the risk of being spiritually weak in the eyes of their coreligionists. Sanctions may be applied to them as unable to speak at meetings, even the excommunication. These ostracized create a state of loneliness and even depression , which forced most of the time the individual to comply with the obligation to respect the excommunication , and consequently to reject totally excommunicated members.
Internet
As for television , the Watchtower Society teaches its followers to be careful in their use of Internet because it is considered unsafe. On the one hand because it believes that its members can spend time at the expense of spiritual activities , but also because of the ease with which information deemed negative by the organization is available. Here's what the organization teaches to avoid:
- The information that is objectionable for the reasons corporations such as pornography ;
- The dangers of chat rooms, particularly for young people because it is possible that pedophiles are as young people to approach their victims ;
- Spiritual exchange on this media. In theory, do not mount a website to defend his religion , much less enter into debate with opponents, even with his co-religionists in chat and forums ;
- Disclose to his fellow via the Internet the results of his research in the preparation of its meetings. Indeed, we recommend everyone to do their own research ;
- Information as Private "apostates." This word means, as defined by the Watchtower Society , all who have left their religion and by extension all those who emit the slightest criticism against him .
In this regard, a guard tower in 2000 stated: " Internet is part of the media which apostates are increasingly used to induce people in error about the Jehovah's Witnesses. Result: sincere people who want to learn about our beliefs sometimes fall on this apostate propaganda. Witnesses have even unwittingly, became aware of those pernicious thoughts. " What Jehovah's Witnesses regard as apostates propaganda is in contrast presented by critics as an alternative viewpoint that must be considered to have an opinion outside the organization. The Watchtower Society teaches that the passage Bible of 2 John 8-11 apply to such "apostates" and that the faithful should thus "never receive" such teachings in any form .
Opponents criticize this warning Watchtower Society against the use of Internet to limit the knowledge of negative information against him, saying he is an example of a technique of mind control , . For their part, the Jehovah's Witnesses respond to such criticism as libraries subsidiaries, accessible by thousands of witnesses and visitors, include books that speak negatively about the Jehovah's Witnesses .
Relationship with society
Work profane
Graduate
The Watchtower Society does not necessarily education, but she tries to demonstrate through its publications, it is better to limit the duration to avoid endangering his spirituality in contact with teaching 'secular': philosophy , prehistory , evolution , etc. . In addition, the publications of Jehovah's Witnesses suggest that it is not very useful to college in a world that has no future, it is better to spend the little time remaining before the Jehovah's response to the preaching work .
Nevertheless, some parents are choosing to take longer studies to their children. In their investigation, the journalist Frdric Lenoir and sociologist of religion Nathalie Luca noted a shift in emphasis to the education of children. They rely on an exceptional example of course, but highlighting this change: the youngest graduate of France in the year 1996 at the age of 15, was raised by parents Jehovah's Witnesses and was accepted preparatory classes to high schools . The investigation by the Sofres above confirms this trend in improving the level of education: "The education level of respondents is also close to that of the average French, except for the class of graduates of higher education cycle long (BAC + 5), which itself is under-represented compared to the average 3% against 12% nationally. However, this rate is higher (7%) in the age group 15-34 years. It is in the age of 50 years and more than the education level is lower: 40% of respondents belonging to this bracket have only a certificate of study, the level rises in the slices younger. "
This information, which focus on Jehovah's Witnesses in France , must be tempered with the figures for other countries. A survey in 2008 to U.S. on all religions, by the Pew Research Center shows that the percentage of university graduates is the lowest of all religions. 70% of Jehovah's Witnesses U.S. with only the equivalent of bachelor or less .
For some time, outside observers noting that a shift was evident in the organization of Jehovah's Witnesses , encouraging further studies, changes that some critics put on the account of the needs of the Watchtower Society , including computer or in the field of law. However, recent articles in The Watchtower as that of October 1, 2005 , or speech made in Italy by Gerrit Lsch, member of Central College , for a Special Meeting of Jehovah's Witnesses, who compared the university to suicide attempt , make them wonder about a possible reversal of the position of the organization of Jehovah's Witnesses .
The video relating the official views of Central College about the university is visible on the internet .
Leisure and entertainment
The Jehovah's Witnesses refuse to participate in all festivals with an eye to their original pagan : Christmas Christmas , Easter , Candlemas , birthdays and also refuse to participate in festivals patriotic considered a cult rendered to the State. However, the anniversaries of marriage may be celebrated.
It is not forbidden to play. In this respect, the publications of the religious movement indicates that the Bible does not condemn the joy that can be felt to be distracted, nor has the distractions like a waste of time. Indicated that they are a natural pleasure and may be beneficial in the physical, mental and emotional . The Jehovah's Witnesses often cite in this regard the verse Bible / A> Ecclesiastes 3:4 where it says there is "a time to laugh" and "a time to pounce." They also noted that in the Israel of biblical times, the faithful entertained in many ways (music, dance, games, etc.). They also note that even Jesus himself had attended a large reception of marriage , proof that he approved wholesome recreational activities .
Politics
Main article: Political neutrality among Jehovah's Witnesses.This religion claims to be apolitical, and not meddle in political affairs, regardless of the country. In this respect, it teaches that religious organizations who side with or support political elements commit the 'spiritual fornication' and deserve to destroying it from Jehovah. However, critics of the movement point out that it has participated in several political meetings or partnered with organizations of this nature, the most famous example being his accession to the UN DPI .
The faith teaches its members not to vote for a party not human . However, since 1999 , the direction of movement has reminded the faithful of the territory French they are required to be registered on the electoral list, which causes a massive influx of applications in the prefectures, such as Overseas Wed. Similarly, they can go to the polls, even when the law does not oblige.
Other religions
Main article: Doctrine of Jehovah's Witnesses.The Watchtower Society believes that the only true religion to the exclusion of any other form of worship. She thinks of divine origin and thus stand out very clearly from all other organizations . In this view, other religions, including those of Christianity , are regarded by him as false and apostate and are, according to the movement, identified in the guise of a prostitute (known under the name "Babylon The Great 'in the Bible ) sitting on a beast, who is accused of compromising herself with the nations of the human world, to teach false doctrines , and combating the Jehovah's Witnesses who consider themselves to be the only true Christians.
Thus, the religions in general are the subject of criticism from the Watchtower Society , and so much so that a critic of the movement was able to write that "one of the most common criticisms of Witnesses Jehovah over the years with respect to their direct denunciations of other faiths (nm faith in the plural), religious leaders and clergymen " .
Moreover, the faithful Jehovah's Witness to be held firmly separated from other religions and refuses to participate in any interfaith relations and ecumenical. It should not normally enter a church during a religious service and should not perform a ritual of another religion (make the sign of the cross, burning of incense for religious, practicing yoga .. .).
Ethical issues
Homosexuality
Main article: Homosexuality in the Jehovah's Witnesses.The Watchtower Society 's attitude towards the homosexuality that is similar to that of most other religious groups, Christian conservatives. Its position is based on verses such as Romans 1:26,27,32 which states:
"That's why God gave them over to shameful sexual desires, because their females changed the natural use . However, it is also clear that if we hate homosexuality, do not hate homosexuals, however . Perform sexual acts between same sex as them back to down to the level of the beast , and a believer who indulged risk of excommunication if he did not repent.The Watchtower Society has said that the punishment was suffered by homosexuals for their behavior, namely "the full salary that deserved their error" in the words Bible , is the inability to establish a stable relationship that leads to boredom and despair , the frustration generated by this way of life , AIDS , the divine favor that homosexuals have lost , the "broken homes and sexually transmitted diseases " .
Thus, the faithful Jehovah's Witness who experiences homosexual attraction can only stay single or marry someone of the opposite sex. This situation may be poorly lived, support sites have been created on the Internet to help gays , lesbians , bisexuals and transsexuals , ex-faithful followers of the movement .
Role of Women
Main article: Women in the Jehovah's Witnesses.Jehovah's Witnesses believe that the woman has a different role from that of man: it is the complement of it, and it is not less than . The husband who runs the family and makes major decisions . Women, for its part, must be submitted to him and show him a deep respect and support, but must devote themselves mainly to domestic chores and child rearing , that the movement considers an honorable role . The Watchtower Society justifies its position in this area by verses such as Ephesians and 1 Corinthians 5:22,23,33 11:3 who say:
"That women should be submissive to their husbands as unto the Lord, because the husband is head of the wife as Christ also is head of the congregation (...). For its part, the woman must have a deep respect for her husband. ""(...) The head of woman is man (...). "In the congregation, the woman can not access functions of supervision ( old , ministerial assistant ), let alone be part of Central College , and she can not teach in public. It may, however, speak at meetings, conduct subject to the theocratic ministry school , participate in the evangelization and possibly be anointed member . If, in the absence of males, it must fulfill a role related to worship normally vested in the man, she must cover her head .
Thus, critics of the movement believe that the Watchtower Society has an outdated view on the role of women, not giving up rewarding to it and do not respect and parity between the sexes .
Humanitarian aid
The Jehovah's Witnesses have always provided humanitarian aid to their fellow Muslims, and this based on verses from the Bible such as Galatians 6:10 who said to "do good to everyone, but especially toward those we are related in the faith.
Until recently, it did not act collectively for humanitarian causes designed to help people outside their faith. However, in the early 2000s , during the meetings of the summer 2000 , the faithful have been clearly informed that the aid to non-Jehovah's Witnesses, or humanitarian in the sense of general assistance and planned to anyone whatever their religion (and not simply turned-off relief only to Jehovah's Witnesses), is considered a duty for the Christian . : "We categorically refuse to associate ourselves with vain ecumenical movements or social actions or other projects seeking to prolong a system that God has condemned because it is doomed to failure " . Thus, an extract of the Kingdom Ministry of September 2006 , states that humanitarian assistance provided by the Jehovah's Witnesses in Tanzania or Madagascar is for those that are "related in the faith":
"Since the beginning of the year and edited by our subsidiary, two humanitarian aid missions have been conducted in Tanzania and Madagascar. Besides a monthly financial assistance for the purchase of food, 3,500 refugees are related to us in faith and live in camps Tanzania receive donations of clothing and productsnecessities. Despite the difficult material conditions, the brothers keep their joy and continue to preach the Kingdom. In Madagascar , the regions affected by famine. Food assistance is provided, and a brother doctor regularly travels to the scene to give hundreds of consultations and try to alleviate the ills

The 12 apostles of Jesus were all men, as Christians who were later appointed elders and ministerial servants in congregations (Matthew 10:1-4, 1 Tim. 3:2, 12). The scriptures advise women to learn in silence at the meetings, with full submission ', which amounts to saying that they were not allowed to raise issues in order to challenge the authority of the male elements of the congregation. Women should 'shut up' meetings whenever their words translate into a lack of submission (1 Tim. 2:11, 12; 1 Cor. 14: 33, 34). Thus, although women participate in large measure to the activities of the congregation, it is not expected to chair the meetings or they take the lead in terms of teaching the congregation so that Christians can are present (...). At Pentecost 33 CE, the Holy Spirit was poured out on both men as women. The Apostle Peter explained the event by quoting Joel 2:28, 29 (...). Similarly women today rightly prennet share in Christian ministry, preaching from house to house and leading Bible studies at home - see also Psalm 68:11, Philippians 4:2, 3. "- Reasoning from the Scriptures, p. 160:
"In what circumstances should a woman cover her head? It does every time she 'prays or prophesies', in the words contained in 1 Corinthians 11:5 (...). It should cover their heads in submission to man if it has responsibilities related to the worship that normally would return to her husband or another Christian. "- The woman and the Watchtower
