After the death of Rabbi Dovber Mezeritch, his followers dispersed throughout the Europe. Rabbi Shneur Zalman became the leader of the Hasidic movement in Lithuania.

In 1940 the Lubavitch movement moved its headquarters in the neighborhood of Brooklyn in New York. Shneur Zalman had opposed the advance of Napoleon Bonaparte in Russia and had supported the establishment of Jewish settlements in Eretz Israel , the Palestine , then under the control of the Ottoman Empire.
