There will be a great warrior. His long reign was a constant series of campaigns against the eastern tribes, the Babylonians , the nations of Mesopotamia and Syria , as Kizzuwatna ( Cilicia ) and Urartu. His army reached Lake Van in the east and the mountains Taurus north-west and south to Damascus where he comes into conflict with the kingdoms Arameans of Syria.

He undertook to raise a regular tribute throughout Syria , he attached the Bit Adini (United Aramaic ) and then submit the cities neo-Hittites to Taurus , including Carchemish , who are forced to pay him homage. He attacked the Syrian Central and the kingdoms of Hamath and Aram Damascus. In Babylonia , already submitted, King Marduk-Zakir-Shumi I (855-819), lack of being overthrown by his brother. He then appealed to Shalmaneser III to resolve the situation. The latter helps to quell the rebellion and keep his throne. He continued his offensive even to the south, raiding tribes Chaldean.

In -853 , Shalmaneser III faces a grand coalition of the kingdoms of Egypt , from Hamath , Arvad , the Ammonites , the king of Israel, Ahab (871-851) and other neighboring states, under the direction King Hazael (876-832) of Damascus. However, the Assyrian perseveres in his attempts to make the kingdom of Israel and Syria. Other battles will follow in -849 and -846. In -842 , he launched a campaign against Hazael and his son Hadad VII (or Hadadezer or Ben-Hadad II -832 / -766 ) forcing him to take refuge inside the walls of his capital, but not Shalmaneser III fails to take Damascus. He then devastated the kingdoms of Israel and Judah (then ruled by Jehu, whose ambassadors are represented on the black obelisk now in British Museum ), and the cities Phoenician.

The spoils of his campaigns can embellish Kalhu ( Nimrud ), which became "home of King City." The end of the reign of Shalmaneser III is marked by a civil war. In -825 , Nineveh and other cities (27 according to enrollment) rebelled against him, headed by his eldest son, Ashur-Danin-Pal. Civil war continued for two years and -823 rebellion was finally crushed by Shamsi-Adad V (or Samsi-Addu, 824-810 and the king of Babylon from 812 to 811), another son of Shalmaneser III, who supported his father and who had succeeded him.
