On Friday, July 8, 1401, at the Chapter meeting which was to decide the monument, one of the canons who uttered this phrase aptly describes the mindset of the authorities in Seville: "Let's build a temple so great that those who see completed we will take crazy! " The builders re-used items and columns of the mosque and its minaret tower transformed into the famous tower of the Giralda , today became the symbol of the city.
The interior, with the longest nave in Spain, is decorated in a luxurious, with plenty of gold. In the main body of the building stands the chorus, which occupies the center of the nave. It opens onto the Capilla Mayor, dominated by the colossal Gothic altarpiece consisting of 45 carved panels depicting scenes from the life of Christ. This masterpiece truly unique and extraordinary sculptor Pierre Dancart is the work of a lifetime: the altar-the largest and richest in the world and one of the finest pieces of sculptured Gothic art.
The cathedral also has a large collection of silverware, paintings and painted statues, as well as the tomb of Christopher Columbus. It houses more than a monstrance monumental is the largest in the world.
La Giralda
La Giralda , a former minaret of a mosque , carries the round function and campanile or bell tower of the cathedral. It is included on the list of UNESCO World Heritage since 1987.
