Summary

Description

This is one of the largest in terms of surface area and volume, all the Catholic cathedrals of the world - keeping in mind that the St. Peter's Basilica in Rome is not a cathedral - and also the largest of Spain. They say it is the largest gothic cathedral in the world for its internal volume: about 500 000 cubic meters.

It measures 132 meters long which is shorter than the cathedrals of Cologne (144.58 m) or of Amiens (145 m), 83 meters wide, the nave vaults of his rise to the height of 42 meters, which is comparable to the cathedrals of Cologne (43 m) and Amiens (42 m) - though less than those of Milan , Palma and Beauvais (48.5 m). She has thirty chapels on its sides.

History

The building was built in place of a mosque Almohad, in order to symbolize, a prestigious monument, the prosperity of the Andalusian capital became a major commercial city after the Reconquista. On Friday, July 8, 1401, at the Chapter meeting which was to decide the monument, one of the canons who uttered this phrase aptly describes the mindset of the authorities in Seville: "Let's build a temple so great that those who see completed we will take crazy! " The builders re-used items and columns of the mosque and its minaret tower transformed into the famous tower of the Giralda , today became the symbol of the city.

The interior, with the longest nave in Spain, is decorated in a luxurious, with plenty of gold. In the main body of the building stands the chorus, which occupies the center of the nave. It opens onto the Capilla Mayor, dominated by the colossal Gothic altarpiece consisting of 45 carved panels depicting scenes from the life of Christ. This masterpiece truly unique and extraordinary sculptor Pierre Dancart is the work of a lifetime: the altar-the largest and richest in the world and one of the finest pieces of sculptured Gothic art.

The cathedral also has a large collection of silverware, paintings and painted statues, as well as the tomb of Christopher Columbus. It houses more than a monstrance monumental is the largest in the world.

It is important not only for its history, but also a remarkable monument of architecture. Its square base located 7.12 meters above the sea level, was 13.61 meters wide, while its height is 104.06 meters. It was built in the image of the minaret of the mosque Koutoubia in Marrakech (in Morocco ), although the upper floor and the bell tower with a lantern that tops it is European-style Renaissance.
