Biography

Its origins

Severus was born in Pannonia or Dalmatia , is an officer and companion of Galerius.

His ascension to the throne

In May 305 , when Diocletian and Maximian Hercules abdicate, Galerius proclaimed Severus as Caesar the Augustus Constantius , he takes the nomen Flavius Valerius. Severus is responsible for the administration of Africa , of Italy and the Illyrian.

The sudden death of Constantius in July 306 changed the tetrarchy implementation: Severus became Augustus , but he must take as Caesar Constantine I , son of Constantius and proclaimed in Britain by the troops of his father.

The end

The mechanism of tetrarchy goes awry in October 306 when Maxentius , son of Maximian Hercules took power in Italy , with the support of his father. Severus marched against Maxentius , but its troops have served previously under the command of Maximian Hercules. They therefore refuse to fight his son and align themselves with Maxentius.

Severe retreats to Ravenna , where Maximian the besieged in vain, then negotiated his release cons live. According to the sources Names successive
