Seven Words Of Jesus On The Cross
The Seven Words of Jesus on the Cross are a series of short sentences spoken by Jesus when he was crucified, just before his death. They are from the four Gospels and led to the development of a spirituality of the cross which found expression in many witty comments. Their exact chronology can be established. (The texts are from the Ecumenical Translation of the Bible )
- Father, forgive them because they do not know what they do ( Luke 23: 34) delivered immediately after his crucifixion between two thieves. Jesus asks that pardon for those who participated in his conviction and execution.
- Verily I say unto thee, today thou shalt be with me in paradise (Luke 23:43) addressed to one of two robbers, in response to its request, remember me when you come into your kingdom. Tradition remembers him as the Good Thief , recognized by the Church as St. Dismas.
- Woman, behold your son. To John: Behold your mother ( John 19:26-27) addressed to his mother and John. Beyond the filial duty thus completed, the tradition has seen this as the spiritual motherhood of Mary vis--vis the believers represented by the "disciple whom he loved."
- My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? "( Mark 3:34 p.m. ET Matthew 27:46) shouted "out loud" in Aramaic Eloi, Eloi, lama sabbaqthani? (Ps 22:2) Suffering Supreme feeling Abandonment: the dark night of the man Jesus.
- I thirst (John 19:28) pronounced "that the Scripture might be fulfilled until the end," says the Evangelist. Jesus quotes Psalm 69:22: They gave me poison to eat, and drink vinegar when I was thirsty.
- It is finished (John 19:30) delivered after he had taken the vinegar. Mission accomplished and peace restored.
- Jesus uttered a loud cry, "Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit (Luke 23:46). And with these words he expired. It is the Father relates that the last words of Jesus as was his first: Do not you know that I must be in my Father's (Luke 2:49).

Besides spiritual writers, the words of Jesus on the cross inspired musicians:
- The oratorio " The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross "by Joseph Haydn is a good example.
- Christophe Looten composed two works based on the last words of Jesus: Mourning for alto and string quartet which mixed songs lament for British soldiers shot by the Nazis in 1940 during the Dunkirk evacuation and evocations of the Saviour on the Cross. He also composed in 2008 his fifth string quartet: " The Seven Last Words of Christ on the cross. " Both works are available in editions Musica nova
- The Seven Last Words of Christ on the cross is also a work sung Cesar Franck and Charles Gounod.
