The church was founded in 1219 by St. Sava (c. 1175 - c. 1235 ), son of Stephen Nemanja , Duke of Serbia.

The Serbian Orthodox Church is in full communion with other Orthodox Churches.

The Church also maintains good relations with the Russian Orthodox Church outside borders.
