Sephardic

The Sephardi (Sephardic sometimes spelled) is a branch of Judaism after the Jewish liturgical Spanish and Portuguese (especially in the pronunciation of prayers ). Some have contributed to science and technology in al-Andalus as Maimonides , Abraham ibn Ezra , Judah Halevi , Ramban , Solomon ibn Gabirol , Moses de Leon. The term "Sephardic" also often the Jews of North Africa , many of whom have settled following the expulsion of 1492.

The Sephardim are named after the Hebrew S ^e farad that designates the Iberian Peninsula. This word is a hapax , that is to say a word that appears only once in the Bible and refers to Sardis , the capital of Lydia on the river Pactolus , including the famous Croesus was king VI ^centuryBC. It is also possible to see the word "Sephardic" a link with the Akkadian and especially the Arabic safar (journey), found in Safari in Swahili. Indeed, the idea of perpetual exile, the wandering Jew , the need to constantly flee persecution could have produced a patronymic ownership of the concept of travel, wandering (this also means that this word in Akkadian).

Another possible origin would have the word "sfarad" is an anagram of the word "Pardes" by swapping the "p" with the "s" to give the root triliteral "Sparda" Sepharad then designating those who study the sod , literally Kabbalah Diaspora

Constrained by the decree of the Alhambra signed by Queen Isabella in 1492 leaving the Spain , the Sephardim still retain a language similar to Castilian sixteenth ^century known as Judeo-Spanish , still spoken today and experiencing similar expressions such as Judeo-Catalan , the Judeo-Portuguese and Ladino.

The Jews of Spain in exile mainly in North Africa in the Balkans , in Greece and Anatolia, then under the control of the Ottoman Empire , but also in Italy. The Jews of Portugal took him to the Netherlands. The Sephardim also migrate in the New World , they were the first Jews of America. In Brazil, Luso-Dutch Jews are the Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue , the first Jewish religious congregation of the Americas in 1636.

The Alhambra decree of 1492 , responsible for the expulsion of the Sephardim of Spain , has remained officially in force until 1967.
